Murderboat, a Dream that is One Step Closer to Reality (Session 41)

 SESSION 41 (aka S40FD): Tomb-Robbers Incorporated  (16FEB17)

Giant brass doors with elaborate carving of Nergal and day-to-day life in the Underworld. This can wait a bit. The tomb crawl continued down dank and dusty corridors into shrines with the looting of many alcoves. They encountered a sizable band of tomb-robbers and in exchange for a little gold were able to fill in some blanks on the map and learned of how the weak increase their survival chances. Risk is associated with the age of excavation, the older portions of Barrowmaze were largely untouched but home of greater malevolent forces. They also attracted a group of Acolytes of Orcus but the hobos clear numerical superiority tempered their fanaticism. They made quick egress for the party’s presence. A corridor carved into the mouth of a stone skull greeted them a short time later, again feeling that resources were dwindling they saved it for later. Further creeping in the dark until they found a room that seemed reasonably securable. They camped and miraculously were able to have a complete rest unmolested.

The search for the Orb continued. Down a corridor thick with dust and bits of rubble and soil from the failing ceiling. The pit was well hidden if the corridor had been clean, now it was an expertly obfuscated danger. Bunny didn’t see nor trigger it, neither did the fighting ranks that passed over. By the time Calvin and Ding-We neared it any possible telltale signs of it had been lost. Compressed soil and debris only showing the many booted feet that had already passed. This time though the trap triggered. Dumping Ding-We and Calvin into a spiked pit. Who knows how old the poison was but perhaps it had lost some of its kick and that is what saved Ding-We’s life. Calvin again showed his luck with poison that and he partially fell on top of DW and escaped no worse for wear. DW was crumpled, broken, perforated and frothing from the poison. As he was pulled out he passed into death’s realm for a moment but his schemes were incomplete and would be lost without him. He sputtered with the faintest signs of life as the clerics administered aid. He was hanging on by a thread. His left leg appeared to be destroyed shattered bones, severed tendons and major arterial bleeding. The healing magics and first aid stabilized him but left him in a comatose state. A stretcher was made and he was loaded. It was decided that perhaps now was a good time to make a hasty retreat back to Helix.

A corridor into large tomb and undisturbed tomb beckoned. Let’s just check it out we can leave a guard with Ding-We to watch him and our backs. After proceeding to loot the antechambers they came to a large room that housed a Viking galley. It was filled with glittering coin and a throne upon which sat a cloaked and skeletal being. It arose as our hobos began to spill into the tomb.

“How dare you thieves come to my tomb?”

“I am Osric king of the Northmen bane of all others you will not take my treasure!”

Burning red light shot forth from the recesses of its eyeless sockets. Hobos blinked out no longer present. Teleported, but this of course was not immediately apparent. Those that remained charged, more were teleported away, they climbed into the vessel, more teleports, they engaged the thing, more teleports, they drove it back into the throne until the teleporting ceased. Riches were found and there was rejoicing. “Yay!” Ok now that we got that let us get out of here. Perhaps, we should just give a quick check of this tomb. Who knows, maybe we will find a hidden delight. They did.

Hidden behind one of the giant corner statues was a very small and hidden door. It was the passage to the true tomb of King Osric and his queen. Two magnificently carved sarcophagi rested at the back of the tomb, flanking them were two runic golems that activated with the arrival of our mob. The battle was tough and they contemplated retreat as the wounds increased. A little bit a luck and mighty Hobo Steve stepping into harms way ended the guardians. The sarcophagi were magically sealed. A scroll and some luck shattered the ancient magics. They had discovered a king’s ransom.
