When Hobos and Hermit Meet, You Just Get Another Wacko (Session 185)

SESSION 185: Land Shark Ho and Other Findings in the Wilds!

Hex clearing the lands around our first future stronghold.

Day 8 – Mild Rain and Wind continues (15.22 -05003/04003/03003/04004): Recovering from the night of the ghoulish wolves the troupe packed up camp and returned to the task at hand of hex clearing. The day was on the miserable side as the inclement weather system was in no rush to break. The day was dotted by a couple of encounters. The first was with a land shark that was able to prove that the bulettes are fearsome beasts able to dish out some big wallops. After the battle the party harvested some of the beast’s heavy armor like hide in hopes of one day using as a component. The gang was now feeling closer to beaten up than fresh and so they decided to return to Greenland (Carla-ville) to fully recover. This journey brought them upon the second encounter. It was an orc warband bearing an unknown mark – Gnashers. The orcs attempted to play from range until they began trading arrows with magic volleys, then they died. The looting was better than expected. A pile of gold and copper the latter of which would be thrown at the sub-humans.. err the little people. After burning the bodies the exploratory team returned to Greenland.

Day 9 & 10 – Mild Rain and Wind and continues (14.22 - Greenland): Rest, recovery and even a little bit of planning.

Day 11– Mild Rain and Wind still around (14.22 à 15.22 03004/02006/03005/04005/04006:Cleared hex): Healed up the team returned to the adjacent hex to finish clearing it in the name of Carla the Green Matriarch of TMB! The job went by efficiently and also netted them a mule deer buck that netted 65 lbs. of meat. They decided to return to Liwil to distribute the deer meat and copper as well as confer with Ding-We as to the next step.

Day 12 & 13 – Cloudy (15.22 à14.23 Liwil): Ding-We didn’t have much to say other than he had no time to talk much as all his energy was going into distilling the essence of basilisk gizzard into a functional restorative ointment. He did make one suggestion however, why not explore further north into the future influence zone of Gormandia?

Day 14 – Cloudy (14.23 Liwilà14.22 Greenland or Carlaville or Stinkberg): The exploration group returned to Greenland to before heading north.

Day 15 – Clear (14.22 Greenland à14.21 – 05007/06008/07007/07006/07005): Setting out the data collection crew entered into the hex immediately north of Greenland. The first sub-hex was occupied by a giant wasp nest that became whipped up rather quickly. It was decided to be avoided for the time being. Moving north along the eastern edge of the hex they first discovered a fairy standing stone structure, most likely a portal to the Pallid Fields for those that knew how to use it. A mile later they encountered a mad hermit, Tontim whom did provide some information when he was not babbling. He had a hermit hole a mile further north that overlooked a lake that was home to something that eats many things except for Tontim himself. Moving along the hermit’s cave was discovered and the lake was observed from afar. The lake gave up no secrets, whatever that dwelled there would remain a mystery for now.

Day 16 – Cloudy (14.21 – 07005/08005/07004/07003/06003à14.20 – 06003/05007)The explorers continued to move north along the eastern hex edge. Things were quieter than usual aside from discovering three stone grave markers can be found in this hex, inscribed with holy symbols and the following names: “Grimria” on the leftmost, “Venka Caa” on the central one, and “Unknown” on the rightmost. The tombstones were three feet tall and made from rectangular slabs of granite. They looked rough, as if fashioned by amateur hands, and are weathered and partially covered in lichen. Bimbles provided the sanctification of Spinning Stars just to make sure nothing arose and the group moved into the next hex doing some initial exploration before camping. It looked like we had reached the extent of the basilisk hills and would be moving through a shrub and deciduous woody vegetation complex. Travel may be slower be there was a satisfaction in not likely encountering more of the damnable namesakes of the hilly region.

Rot Wolves (Session 184)

SESSION 184: The Night’s Terror  (June22)

The continuance of clearing Hex 15.22 of the foul presence of assorted beasts, creatures and monsters.

Day 6 – Moderate rain (15.22 -0606/0705/0805/0704/0605): A bit of a wet day that included the discovery of a gold vein. This must have been where the petrified miners had been. They marked the location, with hobolike avarice, and pushed into the next sub-hex to camp.

Day 7 – Rain and Wind (15.22 -0605/0504/0604/0703): Another crumby day that concluded with a growing band of wolves shadowing the parties movements. They were tricky, only periodically appearing at the very edge of vision through the cover of the prominent deciduous trees. The party eventually camped and made an extended fire line in hopes of deterring the beasts. The wolves, for reasons to come, attacked during the dead of night largely unconcerned with the fires. Sloth and Biff were ambushed as they were maintaining the outer fire perimeter. These were not normal animals but grotesque ghoul wolves that attacked with an insatiable hunger. There were twelve of them including a massive rotting leader. The battle was brutal and came very close to slaughtering the lot of our gang. Bloody and beaten they once more collapsed around the camp. Watch be damned they needed rest.

Murder Empire Further Building (Session 183)

SESSION 183: Building an Empire – The Next Brick

Day 1 – clear (14.21 -07005; 15.22 – 03.07/ 03.06/ 0407/ 0408 camp): Esphael (the dryad) was home and talkative. For a 250 year old bird she was a knockout, no wonder men get lured so easily. Worry not though she was not working any charms, in fact she ended up presenting magic apples to assist with our hobo’s mission. She provided both more information regarding Fae assets along with connections to the Pallid Fields in the outlying hexes she also echoed Baldicar’s words that alliances between Man and the Fair Folk are often dangerous endeavours that end in strife – “Our peoples simply live at different tempos, what is important to man is but a blink of an eye for the fair folk and thus of greatly different importance”. With these thoughts and a bunch of apples the raiding and research party pushed on to the NE to begin clearing (15.22).

Day 2 – Violent rain and lightning (15.22 – 0608/0507/0608) The weather was on this day was miserable and exploration was greatly reduced to satisfy the Union’s safety rep – Ramrod, whom did nothing but complain about his bum leg constantly slipping in the muck.

Day 3 – Clear (15.22 – 0608/0707 à 16.23 – 03004) The storm rolled past over the evening period. The band continued through the rolling grassy hills along the eastern edge of the hex. They noticed a geological anomaly in the neighbouring hex and decided to check it out. It was a rocky box canyon. It was a lair but that tidbit was yet to be figured. The canyon was some forty feet across, about six hundred feet long and thirty feet deep. The walls of the canyon were peppered with overhangs and shallow caves, and the residents had built crude structures into these using rocks, boulders and scrub-brush. It was relatively well camouflaged from above and required entering the box canyon to notice the dwellings. By the time our gang realized there was a lair orcs were all over the place, as they kept a careful watch from a hidden cave at the mouth of the canyon. War was on. Hobos vs. the entirety of the Festering Sore Clan orcs outpost. They were a horde but we are the future rules of these lands. It was only a matter of time, the outpost was defeated and looted. They figured the joint would be a fine place to camp before returing to the task of clearing the adjacent hex. They were pretty happy as the orcs would have been a real problem for peasants and mercenaries.

Day 4 – Clear (16.23 – 03004 à 15.22 – 0806/ 0705/ 0606/ 0506/ 0406) This day as not so easy. Rhagnar fell into a pit of large centipedes causing a lot of unwanted burning. Rhags thought things were hot enough when he peed as it was. Next they discovered a fallen statue/ watchtower of some forgotten sorcerer king that housed a living rock thing that caused some mayhem with little reward beyond a nifty steel dagger.

Day 5 – Clear (15.22 – 0406/ 0505/ 0606) It as a pleasant Fall day and our gang bagged a lovely mule deer buck much to Biff’s satisfaction of once more having meat on the menu. A couple of hours later things were not so much fun as they discovered a basilisk nest shortly after stumbling upon three petrified miners. They initially thought about running and then remembered that clearing meant the eradication of hostiles. They did not have a concise plan and so the action was paused right after the entrance hole to the lair was webbed over.

Day 5 continued the mini session– Clear (15.22 – 0606) After much screwing around trying to find ways to kill the basilisks without risking petrification the numps realized that one must face their enemy to defeat it. Game on, yes after even more screwing around, the gang took on the four stony lizards. Things worked out pretty ideally as magicks were deployed with great tact and were followed by death dealing blades. In the end I failed to petrify more hobos and they successfully harvested another three gizzards towards the production of restorative salves.

Day 21 (14.22/ 06007,07006, 06007): Ding-We had an epiphany while eating his stale bread and green cheese. Basilisk eat their stoned victims but they don’t poop rocks. Therefore some internal component must convert stone back to meat and that thing would be the necessary ingredient in the creation of an elixir to restore victims or petrification (this may have come faster if Bimbles had been more detailed in relaying his conversation with the Sightless Serpent but you know..). They want back to the previous kill site to dissect the basilisks. Under Ding-We’s watchful eye Ramrod carefully cut open the first serpent exposing its internal workings from its mouth to vent. Then they collected saliva and spread it on one of the petrified victims – nothing. The next thought was the intestines and stomach they were both full of meat in various stages of processing, no stone was found. It was the gizzard that was the point of transformation. The gizzard was two-stage. The first held stone and the second had meat residue. “Salvage the gizzards! I can research and then distill potions”. Ramrod cautiously removed the organs from each of the reptiles, without compromising them. They had hoped that Wei-Fan would help them out again but Baldicar Ma’s words of caution regarding inherent danger of the Fair Folk. The whole process took a couple of hours, once more the day was wearing on. They decided to get some distance from the mess of lizard guts before camping for the evening.

Day 22 (14.22/06007, 06008,05007àLiwil) Clear: They were able to quickly proclaim “Mission Accomplished” quickly in the day as the final sub-hexes were searched for monster sign. It was time to get back to Liwil and implement some plans. Aside from yet another basilisk, the damn things are everywhere, they returned to Liwil. It was late in the afternoon when the party finally arrived at their camp. The sailors were happy to continue drinking rum until they hit the blood river. There was a new squad of foot soldiers also milling about ready to protect the workers of Carla-ville.

Ding-We wanted to enact the first part of his plan immediately – regain Wei-Fan’s interest in the Hobos. The satyr ambassador was outside preparing his fire pits for some undefined culinary journey. He was clearly in the bored/ neutral position when our grubs rolled up. Ding-We was forced to bait the satyr’s interest. It worked, the head and meat of a unique basilisk with a most interesting story behind it shifted his reaction check back to ‘interesting enough’. There was good eating and conversation but Wei-Fan is no fool. He had noticed missing party members and he knew there was an ulterior motivation, there always is. He made it clear that it would be absolutely uninteresting if he opened a Stone-B-Gone shop but he would trade for the Sightless Serpent's head. He presented a vial containing the powdered gizzard of basilisk, “It really is exclusively an ingredient for diner's with enemies and since I do not find enemies interesting I will trade it to you”. This was not the instant home run Ding-We wanted but he now had enough ingredients for four potions. On to the next step but first the dinner with Wei-Fan. The feast lasted until early in the morning when the satyr finally gave the hobos the boot while he still found then somewhat interesting.

Day 23 (14.21) Today most of the gang laid about while Ding-We, Raul and Saffron ran errands.

Booking an evening meeting with Hewtim Frid the knights magician. Prior to that Ding-We and Raul negotiated with the alchemist Sylae Ras to upgrade and use her laboratory for the next twelve weeks to create four potions of stone to flesh. During this boring stuff Saff cut the losers loose and spent her day flittering around the dryad tree. A deal was reached and brewing would commence in two days after upgrades and cleaning protocols had been implemented.

Day 25 – 39 (14.21): Ding-We got down to brewing while the rest of the mooks were lining up workers and an engineer to begin the works at Carla-ville. The following week Raul and the rest of the gang led a contingent of workers and two squads of light footman to the rancid fortress to begin repairs. On the way they made a quick side visit to the dryad Esphael to see if she was talkative.

The Sightless Serpent Arises (Session 181)

SESSION 181: The Charnel Sepulchre III (May 2022)

Day 19 (14.22/ 08005): The Crypt

Go! The fight was on. Murderhobos versus evil statue and a bunch of Omega Ghouls (extra arm and leg; necromantic fiddling). The statue thing of evil swung its colossal halberd through the front line – ouch. Omega ghouls were infilling around things looked like they could go sideways very quickly. It was not the time to taper resource expenditures. Ding-We unleashed a freezing cone followed by engulfing a large part of the chamber in flames. This took care of the ghouls but the statue kept on swinging. Rahgnar was pulverized as a blow crushed his chest leaving him incapacitated on the ground, which was a fairly safe place as long as the statue of evil did not stomp him. The rest of the hobos converged on it as Bimbles dragged Rahgs to safety. With the ghouls now only smoldering piles of ash it didn’t take long to bring down the big chunk of stone. They had survived but this endeavour would go without pay as all items in the fake burial chamber had been frozen and then incinerated. After getting Rahgs back on his feet and patching up Charles whom had also taken a serious beating the hobos returned to the entry chamber to consider how to manage the sleeping serpent.

Ding-We once more read the creature's mind and once more it slumbered and dreamed of devouring giant Irish elk. How Irish elk got here is anyone’s guess. It had not been more than a couple of hours since their last rest cycle but they were also bandaged and somewhat depleted. It was decided to leave the serpent for now and continue hex clearing. Let’s come back tomorrow.

Day 19 continued: clear (14.22/ 08006, 07005, 06005, 05004) Venturing once more into the wilds. It was a good plan. Sub-hexes were investigated for monster sign and nothing was found. The evenings rest reflected the growing absence of creatures around Carla-ville.

Day 20: clear (14.22/ 05004, 05005, 05006, 06006, 08005) The return to the dungeon took a circuitous path allowing for the investigation of a couple more sub-hexes – all was mellow. Once more in the entry chamber of the sepulchre standing before the mound of the Sightless Serpent. Bimbles prepared to communicate with the beast and then it was awoken. Ding-We had been convinced that 'serpent' only meant snake. What climbed out was an eyeless albino basilisk of immense size. It roared in anger and from each of its hollow eye sockets a gem formed and fell to the ground.

Bimbles parlayed with the help of his divine powers. “We have slain Ivgah the necromancer. Your keeper is no more”. “Bring him to me!” and with that Biff and Rahgnar made haste to retrieve the corpse. The beast paced like a tiger in cage awaiting confirmation spewing rage but not attacking. They returned and dropped the body of Ivgah before the creature. The serpent approached and then tasted the body with its tongue before opening its maw and consuming Ivgah in a matter of three short gulps. “Free! Curse you for shackling me”. “We freed you mighty serpent you owe us”, snarked Bimbles. Bristling with near insatiable hunger it turned towards Bimbles and croaked “one thing”. The hobos were somewhat taken aback and as a result were out of focus. Bimbles, Raul and Ding-We conferred. “Reverse the petrification of our friends”. “Ha ha, yess stone is food. I will turn them to flesh in my belly. Your foolish request now makes you food!” and with that the hobos burned their only chance to part in peace (reaction rolls and silly asks can lead to trouble). The serpent launched into the front line. Even though it had no eyes it was a basilisk and Rahgnar and Charles figures the trick the hard way. Coming in contact with the creature was the vector, of petrification, and now we had two more stoners. Ranged attacks, magic and mundane, from all angles in hopes of finishing off the beast. It was the handy dandy wand of polymorph (into the fan favourite giant chicken) allowed sharp pointy things to finish up the battle. Ding-We was beginning to feel the weight of solving the petrification problem, “Basilisk hills…screw me”. He then pulled out his potable hole to load in the latest hobo statues along with globs of tastes like chicken meat. By the time they got things cleaned up it was early afternoon and the elected to call it a day the sepulchre had been cleared let’s call it a short day.

Day 21: clear (14.22/08005, 07005,07006,07007, 06007) The gang was ready to go early in the morning eager to finish up clearing the immediate lands of Carla-ville and return to Liwil. The exploration moved from the shaded old woods of the eastern sub-hexes into the grass dominated rolling hills with its scattered groves of trees. The good visibility helped the hobos eradicate a pair of basilisks before they could stone more goobers. It turned out that the reptiles were on a scent trail that out hobos were walking straight towards the source. A ¼ mile later a mutilated elk carcass was found. Dead a couple of days, big chunks missing and a number of barbed black spikes embedded in its head – manticore! They knew there was at least one more in this area and they were closing in. Another mile to the south the hills became much more rough and rocky, this would be a good place for a lair. It was.

The manticore was within a shallow cave set into the southern slope of a hill. The beast, named Imphasfur, was happily brooding in its lair upon a pile of gold coins, until the hobos came along and began climbing the steep and loose slope to the lair mouth. Imphasfur leapt from his cave and took wing raining down spikes. It became a missile battle but Imphasfur could not get enough space from the hobos to limit his punishment. It was too late when the creature realized that it was too close to our band of hunters. Imphasfur’s hoard was a shiny relic of the previous inhabitant of the cave, a hill giant whose bones are now scattered amongst the coins. The gang collected their pay, bandaged wounds and serviced equipment before pressing on.
