Crossing Paths with the Big Guy (Session 127)

 SESSION 127: The Run on He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named (24OCT20)

But first. We must get back to Helix and then make the run back. But really first we have two encounters to resolve.

The first, an inscribed staff with a black gem atop sticks from the muck. What should we do? Eventually it is touched and the trap is sprung. The swamp rises up and takes the form of vegetable man-like-thing and we had a fight on our hands. The shambling mound put up a good fight, bashing out the last of Boris’s teeth, but it was only one big vegetable against a horde of murderhobos. Loot, cleanup and push on.

The second encounter, a very handsome 22’ foot human-like being crossed our path. This was a titan and not just any titan it was Titanic George Clooney. The most handsome titan of the year 4096 (whenever that was/is). He was passing by and in a rather jovial mood. "Well what is this? You must be my adoring public looking to bask in my titanic handsomeness since you all must know I am the cover to 'Titan Magazine - Titan of the Year edition. Since i have things to do and cannot wait for your lives to expire after adoring me for the rest of your fleeting lives let me offer a once in a lifetime opportunity". From a titanic sling on his back he pulled out and then unrolled a poster of most titanic proportion. "Let me present you with something that you can adore in my absence and for a very nominal fee for one such as myself I will provided a personalized autograph." We decided to purchase the autograph on the nearly life sized promotional poster -

To those often between my toes, start each of your fleeting days off right by basking in my presence.

Your idol TGC

George smiled down upon the little people “(you) who make it all happen” and pressed on. “Look upon me and knowwwww” George's voice faded as his titanic strides quickly moved across the foul mess that we slogged through (time and time again). Steve and Sloth heaved the poster upon their shoulders like some great timber and the hobos marched on.

Getting back to Helix a week was gobbled up for various reasons. After affixing the Titan George poster across the whole of the ceiling in the barrack Raul got bored and pulled a card from the deck. The card was the Jack of Diamonds and it was good. How good? I cannot remember but he did not 'Zaphod' and that is a win, look it up if you really want to know (ya bums). After the card event that wasn't, it was back into the swamp. It was time to run at them damn cultists once more. The journey back was nice and smooth. Back in the chamber of the Minoton evil symbols were held aloft and we entered the door most likely to lead to our destination. It appeared to be the correct choice.

The corridor was illuminated and there was a doorless chamber immediately adjacent. Silence was in play and there was invisible sneaky hobos that got in quickly and neutralized the first line of cultist defence (Mortimer and Gethron). Back in the main corridor there was a door 50 or so feet further along. The barrier was investigated and deemed trap free. Since the group was still under the cover of silence Boris gave a swift kick to the door. It broke into many pieces and with its destruction revealed a chamber with more cultists and a host undead horrors. No time to look around the fight was now. Well, not really now but next time as this ending is a bit of a cliff hanger as they say (whomever they are).

The Ongoing Story of Death for the Dead (Session 126)

SESSION 126: The Return of Return of Hunting for Treasure in a Giant Tomb

(18OCT20)

The cards would be a mystery for another day as they were packed away. Next we went right back to looting crypts. The smaller drape covered ones presented some loot, some weird stuff and a trap. It was now time to address the two sealed tombs. One contained a benevolent spirit that lauded our accomplishments and only requested that his, and his wife’s, tomb be left in peace. This entity could have been a number of things but not presently malevolent and so it was decided to present last rites and let the dead rest. The other tomb was not so pleasant. Interred were two black-hearted brothers whom have risen as hateful wraiths. They passed through the stone door and were immediately compelled to destroy Carla. One slashed into her flesh draining her very life essence. As she fell back our heavy hitters fell in. We had to make quick work of these beings, and we did. Their tomb was then gleefully violated.

Roughed up but not quite ready to rum home to mommy. Back to the Harpy hole and then north to the unexplored passageway. They quickly moved through the first chamber, empty but for a door. It opened to a wide corridor with three doors and a passageway to the east. Six crypts were found. Four of the chambers were investigated. As usual a couple contained life hating undead and a little bit of treasure to make it all worthwhile. One crypt was interesting. Inside was a glass coffin containing a well preserved Elven maiden. Beautiful and untouched by time. Dead and preserved or in stasis we could not determine. The coffin was locked and unopenable, a key in the shape of a winged scarab was required. We did not have it. This failure to loot broke our concentration and we moved back to the hub corridor and investigated the doors going west.

One door led to burial alcoves and a stinking clockwork cobra. The other door led to something much more interesting. A sarcophagus that contained an eerily silent vampire that lunged forward when we cracked it. Our hobos had a split second to decide their course of action, vampires are serious business but this one was weird. Rather than attacking Carla used the power of TMB to dispel any magics. The hobos were facing an illusion. This was no mute vampire but a paladin captured by a Necrolyte of Nergal. He is Sir Pelinore and he now offered a year of service before returning to his knightly order for his most fortuitous rescue.

We were now feeling beaten up and did not want to risk any misfortune. It was time to make a run back to Helix rest and then take out the Troops of Orcus once and for all. The egress from BarrowMaze was seamless and the trek through the swamp was looking good – until it was not. What is this that approaches, does it soar above or is it rising from the muck? Only random rolls will determine during our next instalment of MurderHobos Incorporated.

Death's Hand (Session 125)

SESSION 125: Why Did We Have to Find THAT?  (12Oct20)

Locked away in our little corner of the tomb of tombs we were able to rest. It was not a nice rest by any means. We huddled in a cold mausoleum even though the stone was dry moisture sunk into our bones. The very crypt was like a vampire drawing out the warmth of life. There is no doubt that Barrowmaze hates all life and we have offended it so many times. Is Barrowmaze greater than MurderHobos? Not today. Shaking off the cold and damp we once more set out. Back to our web wall that had likely just recently crumbled into nothing.

Bunny took lead not quite understanding how light works struggled to determine if the Ju-Ju were still in the vicinity. The twang of bowstrings helped clear this up as she jumped back around the corner. I guess they had nothing else to do than stick around. Ding-We got a little tricky and provided ‘protection from normal missiles’ to the front line as these zombie things seemed fixated with archery. Sloth, Boris and Steve charged into the Ju-Ju line. Arrows bouncing harmlessly off them. The tanks hit the zombie line with abandon. By the time the zombies began to catch on it was too late for them to mount any viable counter strike. Victory was ours. Clean the weapons and readjust the armour and press on.

We came to a large chamber that housed six mausoleums each adorned atop with a unique statue. There was also a big ass set of ornate bronze doors that were sealed with a rope. But first, the mausoleums.

A couple had already been looted. Our hobos first choice for cracking was the dummy crypt, no traps no treasure, this quickly changed. The first had a diversionary trap and ended up with Steve being coated in black pudding. Black puddings are horrendous and the combat was very close to becoming a catastrophe. The next tomb contained an amber golem that came out swinging as a reward for defeating the physical exterior trap. With some tasty rewards and the mausoleums now fully looted we approached the double doors on the southern wall of the chamber. What’s up with this?

Well, it was another trap. An insidiously funny one in my books. Our hobos were perplexed. Ding-We stepped forward after remembering that he has had a dagger at his side since forever. “I will cut this vile barrier!”. The rope did not care for this and quickly revealed its true nature – it was a rope of strangulation. Ding-We’s head quickly turned purple as rope tried to pop his head off. Never one’s to rush into danger, the rest of the group began debating the next step. Ding-We’s eyes began to rupture forth due to the pressure. The group attempted to feed him a potion but nothing was going down. Boris was then grabbed by the rope as well. Finally, but probably a mistake on my part, dispel magic was cast and the rope fell to the ground inert. Now! The horde pounced upon the rope with sword and axe chopping it into little pieces.

Into the next chamber. It was a massive, supported by twelve 30’ pillars that were carved in the likeness of warriors at the bottom 10’. Additionally the room was lined with burial crypts that were covered with rotting yellow curtains. “We are going to be attacked!” This was true but not immediately so. Investigations began and then at the right time four of the carvings animated and attacked. Fighting followed.

Next, onto crypt looting. Digging through the burial alcoves there was traps, tricks (Carla unexpectedly sensed an illusion) and treasure. There was some snotty slimes but they were just a passing irritation. More troubling, for some reason, was a deck of cards found clutched in the hand of a long dead adventurer. This was only the first third or so of the alcoves in the crypt. More plundering will come once we deliberated on the worrisome deck of cards.

Yup, if you have been around for awhile certain items raise a particular flag and warp thoughts. Sooner or later they will buckle and draw from the deck, it is inevitable.

Dead End Murder (Session 124)

 SESSION 124: Dead End  (4Oct20)

Should we rush them Orcus-ites? Yes. No. Yes. No. After some very tedious back and forth it was decided that it probably was not to our advantage to attack while the bad guys had their guard up. Also we didn’t really want to keep testing the Minoton. Instead our hobos fell back to the stairwell to the north.

The stairs descended to an empty foyer with a number of directional choices. We went south and came to an antechamber that contained a throne decorated in praise of Athena. It was surrounded by scorch marks and had an incinerated corpse in the seat. After a modicum of investigating (maybe we needed Felix after all?) it was concluded that the corpse was a cultist and Sloth should sit in the throne – reckless bastards. Nothing happened. Hmm. No fire of the gods. Get out of there Sloth! Ahh. Next up, because we fear no reasonable thing, was our green girl Carla. This time a golden light enveloped the throne and when Carla arose from her seat she was wiser. For whatever it was worth. Feeling spicy we pressed on.

Into a hallway containing eight crypts. A host of ghastly undead entities and a crystalline golem that then culminated with an iron golem. This battle, occurred overtop the final resting place of Dresta, a mighty warrior of Athena, was potentially far deadlier than anticipated. The hobos caught on to this in the nick of time and figured out the iron behemoth prior to mortalities but not by much. The reward was stupendous. Dresta was interred with weapon, armour and glorious ancient gems. We were a little beaten up after this sequence but there was still time in the day and with no further to go we backed tracked to the throne room.

Something was amiss. We could smell rot. Just barely visible was a group of restless dead, leaving the other end of the chamber and unaware of our presence. Hulking minotaur carcasses in the rear and what appeared to be more conventional zombies in the front. Ding-We and Raul saw this as a fine and fitting opportunity to light the fuckers up. Get it done and get done quick. Electricity shot forth from their fingertips. Decaying minotaur carcasses exploded covering the place in gore. The others however were little perturbed by the electrical blast and pulled out wicked bows as they spread out like spiders upon all available surfaces and launched back a volley of black arrows behind the remaining, and charging, undead minotaur. Ding-We this time blasted back with a cone of cold. Again they cackled back from their broken black throats, hobo magic seemed useless. Our hobos had already taken a good beating today and these guys (ju-ju zombies for those in the know) looked to be some tough hombres. Ding-We finally realized that we needed to regroup. This called for a classic tactic, in order to stop the ju-ju from gleefully perforating from out of the blackness ahead.

            “Web and retreat!”

Murder for the Followers of Death (Session 123)

 SESSION 123: Another Swing at He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named (28Sept20)

    Back in the saddle.

        Back in Barrowmaze.

            Back to the octagonal chamber.

                Back to murder!

This time we would actually enter while brandishing the newly acquired unholy symbols. Well, when I say we it was actually Bunny. She was not happy with this but sucked it up. Bunny approached the nearest door there was no response from the statue. Things will go off the rails in just a few moments. Why you ask? Well because our hobos are about to yet again violate the first rule dungeoneering – resource management. First Bunny listened and then she inspected the door and during this time some cultists walked into the chamber from one of the southern doors. They saw our group and went into a fanatical frenzy. The following hostile interaction ended up activating the Minoton. This thing was tough. It stepped forward and cut into the front line. The hobos thought they could take down the beast as they had made quick work of the cultists. They were wrong. The Minoton’s second swing nearly cut Charles in half. He fell to the ground with a sickly sucking sound coming from his chest. He was dying. Retreat! We had the jump on the Minoton and so Charles was dragged from the chamber and we fell back behind the door. The creature did not follow.

Carla and Bimbles quickly got down to the healing arts and this likely saved Charles from becoming another statistic. It was time to make a quick exit. Things were moving along quickly until we were ambushed by phase tigers out in the swamp. This of course meant a fight as these odd cats were hungry and they could smell Charles’s weakness. The first two were mangled and the other decided to try for easier game. We pressed on and returned to Helix without further incident. Charles was put to bed and was subbed out for Steve. An evening’s rest was taken and then it was back into the swamp.

The journey back back back (or whatever it was) to Barrowmaze was active with encounters with manticores and giant ants. Arriving back at the barrow moor our hobos once again entered via the harpy hole. This time however they did not want to waste anytime about the Minoton. Unholy symbols were held high and our group made haste through the southern door heading east. Exploration was conducted and some neat stuff was found. In particular finding the final resting place of Sir Wildrif Raurriel, Paladin and Hero. The presence of golems made fighting a prerequisite to communicating with Sir Wildrif but when we did he turned out to be a fine old ghost. Heck he even gifted us his armor, shield and sword to assist in our battle against the forces of Orcus. There was also some scorpions but we avoided them and their death venom. As the ghost happily returned to its rest we too decided to grab our breath before making the next stab for the Temple of Orcus.
