Murder Domain the Sequel - Gormandia! (Session 189)

 SESSION 189: Gormandia Ho!

Wherein the gang is once more redistributed and the fingers of influence and exploration expand deeper into the wilderlands. In particular to commence with the home hex of the future site of Gormandia!

Day 40 – (14.23 -Liwilà14.22 - Greenland): With the brief amount of free time at Ding-We’s disposal he was irritating (almost like he is becoming like every other wizard) and realigned the exploration team one more time. The team set out for Greenland before Ding-We could muck with anything else.

Day 41 – (14.22 à14.21à 14.20): Travel day

Day 42 – (14.20à13.19-0608): Arrival in destination hex

Day 43 – (13.19- 0608/0507/0408/0307/0407): Today was clear and crisp – a fine time for exploration. A strange tooth like rocky geological anomaly was a home to hundreds of bats. Mason spoke with them and learned of manticores lairing to the west. The hot tip was taken and the gang moved on looking to clear the first lair in the possible future land of Gormandia. The manticore nest was not all that hard to find. The bats had given excellent direction and rocky areas in the middle of forests tend to be a preferred place to lair. The slobbering band crept up on the lair and setup for an ambush.

A deep cut ravine exposing a rocky wall and on side a large hole. Bones and debris littered the dry channel. Wendul wasted no time and prepared magical bolts to pummel whatever came forth. Our hobos taunted the gaping stony maw. This lured out the arrogant occupants. A pair of manticores surprised by real opponents whom immediately let forth a volley of assorted misses. The beasts took to wing. Saffron immediately bumbled the brains of one while the other, enraged released its own volley of barbed missiles. Poor monsters did not last long. Creeping up the steep slope and into the cavern it was full of delights, filth and the stink of large predators. Gold, gems, jewelry, potions and even a treasure map it was a good heist.

Afterwards the gang pressed on to the next subhex to camp. The night was uneventful except for the five giant tarantulas that ambushed our campers. After some uncontrollable dancing Steve had the things on the fire for a midnight snack, “Hey deez things tase like chicken! Dig in”.

Expanding the Hobo Lands (Session 188)

SESSION 188: Expanding Our Influence (June22)

Previously we had once more reunited our band of nomads. To(o) much rejoicing. Steve has since led a crack(head) band of hobos to continue with the exploration and clearing of hexes around the future kingdom of Greenlandia/ Stinkville/ Carla-World or whatever it ends up being… This is their ongoing story of murder for money.

Day 33 – Clear skies (14.21 – 06004/05004/05003/04003/03003/04004): On this fine day a wyvern nest was discovered atop a rocky outcrop. I fireball was launched and mucho treasure was slagged. After the combat when the damage and destruction was revealed there was mucho hobo lamenting the travesty of fireballs wrecking things – consequences mother fuckers, consequences.

Day 34 – Cloudy (14.21 – 04004/04005/ 03004/02005/02006/03005/04006): After marginally recovering from an Evil DM our band discovered a gold vein. “We are back in the money!” Resources seen abundant in these basilisk ridden hills it would seem with this hex providing both gold, slate, timber and vegetables.

Day 35 – Clear (14.21 – 04006/03006/04007/05007 Hex cleared): Today was another pleasant day of exploration that resulted in the clearing of this hex of monstrous lairs.

Day 36 – Clear (14.21à13.21 – 0806/0706/0707/0608/0607 à14.22 Greenland): The gang decided to return to Greenland to rest up and plot the next move. Much like most of our travels through these lands we need to run into the namesakes. A pair of basilisks were encountered and things ended up messy. Both Felix and Mason were petrified before the reptilian opponents could be neutralized. Funk & Wagnell’s! Steve produced the portable hole and tossed two more stoners in along with the recoverable lizard gizzard. They made double time back to Carla’s Joint.

Day 37 – (14.22 à14.23): Travel from Greenland to Liwil and a little mucking about town, uneventful.

Day 38/ 39 – (14.23 -Liwil): Ding-We has created not only the formula but his first ointment of Stone to Flesh. After some ‘debate’ it is decided that Mason would be the test subject. Steve covered stony Mason with goop like he was buttering a pig. Before our very eyes Mason the cleric of something once more took breath. All flesh and no stone, it was a minor victory we just need four more salves to get everyone back in the game. The hobos celebrated the moment uncertain what tomorrow’s plan may be.

Pleasures of the Flesh (Session 187)

SESSION 187: Expanding Borders, Back to Monster Killing (June22)

Day 31 continued – cloudy (14.22à14.21- 0507/0607/0506/0606): After a quick turnaround in Greenland, we won’t cover Carla’s shock that Team Denethix had found and were in the process of repairing the fortress for her, Steve and a medium sized group set out to continue the clearing of the lands to the immediate north (14.21). Along with ole Stevie was Sasha, Dolec, Wendull, Mason, Wily (and Agolloch), Felix and Gurn Hammerhand. First stop was the giant wasp nest. The wasps had numbers and know not retreat when their nest is threatened. The damn things were tough and our gang underestimated the insects and took a beating for it. And! The stupid bugs had no treasure.. Pressing on they discovered an pink-veined granite deposit that was sure to earn more gold sometime in the future. Gurn was very impressed by the stone suggesting that it was very top notch. That evening Sasha observed another orc warband moving west past the camp site. The orcs did not notice the cleverly hidden camp.

Day 32 – clear and crisp (14.21 – 0606/0505/0605/0507/0604): Moving on the gang once more approached the lake when Felix came up with an idea, “Why don’t we get the wasp carcasses and offer them up to the thing in the lake?”. Many hobos just wanted to tell Felix to get bent on principle but it was a decent idea and so they back tracked to the wasps. This allowed Felix to once more be irritatingly correct, “Say fellows the queen did have a magnificent stinger. I wonder if it has some value?”. He was right and it was harvested along with packing away a gaggle of the dead insects into the portable hole. They returned to the lake with a plan in hand.

Steve, Dolec and Gurn approached the lake planning to drop the waspy offering along the shoreline. It was a reasonable plan but the watcher Goltulash was close at hand and did not wait for the hobos to set up the offering. Instead the humungous crocodile revealed itself and snatched Steve into its jaws and began thrashing the crap out of him. Goltulash immediately began to fall back into the lake to consume Steve. Mason attempted to negotiate Steve’s release but the ancient reptile had tasted fresh human blood and was not going to trade that for anything. Dolec chased into the waters after the creature while Gurn cursed from shore, he was just too short and armored to enter the waters. Goltulash held onto Steve crashing him further be the second, he refused to concede to death and found a way to continue to deliver blows. It came down to who was fastest. Either Steve would die at the bottom of the lake or Goltulash should have curtailed its blood lust and listened to Mason’s petition. It was the latter, Dolec was able to finish the ancient monster before it could escape and finish Steve off. Dolec freed Steve and brought him to shore for first aid and healing as he had numerous wounds welling copious amounts of blood where he had been impaled upon Goltulash’s monstrous teeth.

Afterwards they retrieved the crocodile's corpse and commenced with the salvaging of materials. Once Steve was back on his feet he was anxious to eat the beast. They camped just far enough away from shore to be safe from, or so they presumed, any possible progeny of the crocodile and enjoyed Steve’s barbecue.

Nothing to do with nothing just a spider at my grandmother's house or maybe a grim portent, only time will tell.

Ideas for Randoms & Metal!

This post has languished for almost a year (8/20/22).

Just a little fuel for the imagination.

Fly my little bird, fly!

The lands between Helix and Barrowmaze are gross. A wretched swamp plagued by swarming biting insects with a legacy of corruption that anything could occur. Might as well be Blackmoor.

Anyways. I needed a new random table for the journey back and forth from the Tomb of Tombs. We have exhausted many already. So this time i turned to some of my favourite metal albums (as many have used) and simply pulled things that sounded cool.

Next step build or reskin creatures, figure how the variable and weird manifest. I like using 2d6 tables as they have enough breadth to easily include three general categories of encounter and proper placement within the bell curve to keep the super wicked/ or special stuff towards the spectrum of lower probability.

Nothing new. I know. It just works and always has.

A more benevolent DM would have put some mundane right in the middle (normal animals, biting insects, enviro hazard, dancing with fairies).

If we were not in a corrupted swamp I would have likely included at least two and up to four benevolent encounters (e.g. recruitable NPC/ trader/ info source/sign) which has been implemented in the past. This time it would simply be variable possible misery. The party are not green hands many things, mundane things, just don't cross their path anymore (survival of the fittest).

Looking at the list again, it is clear to me that I have Carcosa fever. The uncontrollable urge to make everything as weird as shit.

1/12 - weird

2/3/10/11 - variable

4 thru 9 - monstrous

Uncontrollable Urge to Hex Crawl (Session 186)

SESSION 186: A whole lotta going back and forth – Getting lost in a big forest

Wherein it is decided that the plan has been adjusted – pray that it is not adjusted further.

Day 17 – Rain and high winds (14.20à15.20 à16.21): Somehow someway somebody had a psychic connection with Ding-We or some such thing and a new plan came to light. The exploration crew needed to go back to Helix and collect Team Gormandia. The trip to Denethix was once more delayed as there was many things to do in these lands and hands were short with four party members doing the statue thing currently. They put away there clearing tools and strapped on their travelling boots and headed southeast through the uncharted forest lands.

Day 18 – Clear (16.21à17.21à18.22 =lost): Plugging through the forest looked easy but unbeknownst to our travellers they were lost and moving in circles. Why did they let Sasha take a hiatus/ retire from MurderHobos Incorporated? The only interesting thing during this day was an uninterested wyvern. The big reptile flew by for an observation and kept on going. It was either well fed or just smart enough to know it could not pull off a smash and grab with the prevalence of woody cover for the hobos.

Day 19 – Clear (18.22à17.21à18.21): The hobos were now well lost. However they did have some good fortune towards the end of the day. Stumbling upon a glade with a group of unicorns. Saff could not control herself and busted out of the forest to pester the beasts of Law. Sloth was right behind her being draw towards the horny equines. Not normally fans of fae beings they could immediately sense that insanity had actually made Saffron a creature of Law and tolerated her jibber-jabber. Bimbles stepped forward to communicate with the unicorns. The leader a giant mare seemed to have very little patience for whatever garbage Bimbles had to say for he was after all not a being of Law. This did not deter the cleric as he tried a number of tactics to gain a greater dialogue with the unicorn. During this time Sloth had not only approached the other unicorns but was touching them and producing vegetables to share from his pouch. Saff just kept bouncing around as she is apt to do. The lead mare was not without benevolence and shared one important piece of information and a little something else with Bimbles before telling him to pound dirt – “You fools are lost, turn about face and stay true to your path and that thing you saw was Autrak be wary in these lands. Now begone”. The mare turned away but before departing she touched both Sloth and Saff with her horn and spoke in the language of Law “Be well friends”, with that the two had been blessed. Bimbles a little disgruntled did a 180 and re-entered the forest the rest of the gang fell in. They travelled for another mile before camping.

Day 20 – Clear (18.21à19.21à20.22): Half-way through this day there was another encounter and Bimbles once more irritated some folks, he as a matter of fact very nearly caused some serious heck. This time it was a group of nine riders, a mix of humans, elves and a halfling. They greeted our foot soldiers pleasantly enough but Bimbles was compelled to figured out what their orientation was and began to cast ‘know alignment’. Well this led to an immediate negative escalation as this group was eagle-eyed and as everyone knows spell casting is an aggressive act. Raul was able to swat Bimbles just in time to avoid a controversy. Our group was rightfully brow beat by the leader of the riders before they displayed their Lawful ways and turned the other cheek. They confirmed the direction our gang should be travelling and that we were indeed close to our destination. Bimbles pushed for more but the riders said they were on an urgent holy mission to the west and could no longer dilly dally. They did not have extra time for rude travellers. The hobos once more pressed on a little longer with Bimbles being a little more disgruntled.

Day 21 – 24 - Clear (20.22à21.22 Helix): The final leg of the journey was quickly covered and the gang surprised Steve and company just in time for Brett and Germaine’s locally known brunch extravaganza. The two hobo squads caught up over eggs benedict. Steve had recruited a small mercenary force known as Gorblat’s Splats whom had recently suffered some serious losses as soldiers and now were looking for a better way to make a living. Acting as police seemed to be just what they wanted. Over the next couple of days The group began to pack up their hordes of wealth and acquire the necessary components to bid Helix adieu. During this time Carla and Nara gave an extra strong push on their charitable legacies and then attempted to have one last session of stuff with Muzzah. He was grumpy, as usual, and completely unwilling to use his most potent magicks to make things easier for such an experienced glob of hobos. “You don’t need my help, you are perfectly capable of resolving your own problems. I am saving my powers for those that need it people like you were when you first arrived not who you are now. If the stars go wrong once more I will send message for the heroes of the land, until then begone!”. Carla did not let this get under her green skin. Muzzah has consistently been a canker sore and today would be no different. They then attended to final business and then the army rolled out of Helix for Liwil.

Day 25 – 30 – Unusually hot (21.22à 14.22 Greeenland): Traveling with a small army really reduces encounters and having Sasha guide the trek really reduces getting lost and taking the circuitous route. Sasha did observe a puma one morning but it was making its best effort to steer well clear of the mob of men. They arrived back in Greenland quickly and without detour or delay.

Day 31 – Clear (14.22 Greenland): Now armed with Steve’s mounted units from the mercenary group it was possible to enforce order in another hex in the Greenland “flower”. The patrolling of 15.21 would start in the morrow before any creatures move back in.
