Ferngully Lost Land of Murder (Session 228)

SESSION 228 (Side Session): Siege on the Gangrenous Pt. 5 – Fool’s Ascent

The B(oris)-Gang follow the tombstone stairwell for days with their insufficient supplies quickly diminishing before encountering another soul and end up finding a bizarre prehistoric subterranean fern jungle.

Day 165 continued thru 167 (not of this world): They descended for two uneventful days within this non-descript tube. No alcoves. No side passages. Just ever going deeper. The error of their ways was really sinking in. They had no idea where they were going or were. To make matters worse an inventory of supplies revealed a group largely unprepared for an expedition that lasted much more than a day or two. Rations were limited and water was already sniffing around the danger zone. They could only march towards their destiny.

Day 168: In the stairwell still. Around midday, at least from a marching perspective, they caught a rank scent and then what sounded like the quacks of a muffled duck. The stink was from a horde of rotting ghouls stacking the passage. The quacking came from a dwarf-sized armored duck clutching a deceased monkey being in a small side chamber. It seemed that they had come across the result of a final battle that had ended with the loss of a dear companion. The duck did not really seem to care at the hobo presence, in victory he was defeated. It took a little prodding to get the abnormal waterfowl to get focus. He was Ike and his friend was Winston. He claimed to be an ‘avatar’ while Winston had found true-death. It took more than a little prompting but the gang finally got a some clarity on things. They were in the Dreamlands and Ike was not truly present. His physical form was elsewhere unlike Winston and our hobos. “Waagh. If I die I will awaken elsewhere. Totally screwing my mission but I would awaken, that is what being an avatar in the Dreamlands means. Winston, much like you, was here physically and can only escape through a portal and death is death. Waagh!”. This still did not make a lot sense but one thing was certain they should help Ike the Duck however they could. They eventually got Ike to shake off his malaise and they successfully convinced him that they all should work together to achieve their goal of getting the hell out this tunnel. After they reached this conclusion Ike began to clear up and asked where they had come from. “From up the tunnel” “Waagh! That portal is now dead to us. We must find another. All that for nothing…”. They once more marched onwards.

Day 169: This day they came to a cross road. Ike told them that is from where he and the ghouls had come. “In the Dreamlands the earth is home to the Empire of the Ghouls the unintended guardians of the world portals created by the passage of the mighty space worms as they pass through the planes looking for worlds to hollow out and consume”. The prospect of battling hordes of ghouls only gained two votes, from Ike and Agolloch. It seems that duck-folk have an innate hatred for undead, due to some species specific albatross, and Agolloch is simply an overzealous piece of sharpened metal. They all continued further into the depths of the unknown.

Day 170: Water was running short(er) resulting in rationing. Making the march even less fun. However, things did change towards the end of the day. The tunnel ended. Spilling into a massive subterranean valley. How big was difficult to say as before them was a colossal and prehistoric fern forest. After some observation and conferring between Sasha and Ike, both of whom have very good directional sense, they concluded that they must go “that way” to cross the forest. Even though they were underground the chamber was illuminated by some sort of non-point source ‘sun’ high above. The group crawled down from the elevated ingress and setup camp.

Day 171- 174: They marched for four days through the primordial forest as the supplies dwindled even after rationing. Starvation and more importantly dehydration were becoming serious concerns as more days passed. The fourth day provided both reprieve and horror.

The morning of the fourth somehow inexplicably brought a storm thunder and heavy rain. They used the first half of the day to collect and drink the precipitation. Until their activities caught the notice of a feathered tyrannosaurus like creature. It was a bloody battle for our already partially starved hobos.

To make things weirder it seems we all slipped into a dream where Willy with the help of Agolloch’s power of teleportation landed atop the monster for a moment before slipping, falling to the ground and then being eaten by the beast.

In whatever reality we were currently occupying Willy disappeared only to reappear 10’ above the dinosaur’s head with Agolloch thrust low like a pogo stick that then was buried hilt deep into its huge skull. This was a glorious killing blow. The lizard’s final death throes did end up throwing Willy into the ferny understory but he was most certainly not dead – for once. Agolloch screamed in victory and Willy really liked not appearing to be dead. A rest was required before anything else the team may have been victorious but the cost of victory was not cheap.

We will find out what’s in the creatures guts and if it does taste like chicken next time.

This Ain't Good. The Land of No Return (Session 227)

SESSION 227 (Side Session): Siege on the Gangrenous Pt. 4 – The Land of No Return

The B(oris)-Gang try ANOTHER return to the village of the Gangrenous Orks. Murder was in abundance and then they crossed the line.

Day 164 (14.23 Liwil): Once more the gang set out for the slate mine camp. They had had the opportunity to have another short conversation with Balidicar Ma regarding the future of the Basilisk Hills. Besides being cold the journey was uneventful to the mine. They fiddled away remains of the day after the five hour hike.

Day 165 (14.22 Slate mineà13.21 Orcs): With the crisp and cold dawn the B-Team moved west towards the rock. There was no unusual presence of ghouls n’ ghasts nor wandering orcs. Returning to the path into the box canyon it was evident that the orcs had barricaded the primary entrance. The tanks moved up and were once more greeted by arrow fire. The garrison were living on borrowed time as the hobo plague worked its way to and then over the barrier. Two pigmen survived and tore off along the unexplored eastern boundary of the village. Ramrod noted shadowy figures amidst the battlements of a taller building to the north. They chose the pathway along the western boundary of the canyon. This was the beginning of the end…not for the first time.

Moving along the living stone wall they passed a number of long derelict domiciles. Tedium creates apathy and that leads to a lack of attention. Just in time for a bit of an ambush. The orcs had captured the released troll and had it in shackles. As the gang walked passed it was released and combat ensued. Getting through this bit of ultra-violence they continued to slink along the village edge. They came to a building with notable tracks going to and fro. Sasha was in the middle of the pack so by the time she got to look at them the damage was done and no information was gleaned. At the back of this chamber was twisting tunnel descending deep into the earth it looked like another clan lair entrance. They went down.

The stairs leading to the lair were carved from the living rock, winding and twisting down nearly one hundred vertical feet, by the time they reached the bottom there was no ambient light nor any illumination within the lair to be seen. Black as pitch and dead silent. They stood at a rough T-junction and moved to the west following the northern wall. Passing a wide corridor before coming upon the larder. The larder was packed with fungi and meats of curious cut and strange marbling. None felt like a snack. They pressed on and came to a fairly larger chamber at the ed of the passageway. It was non-descript except for six identical stones perfectly bisecting the chamber. Boris thought these were odd, and they were, so he called Wendull up front to determine if they were indeed unusual. Wendull uttered a spell of detection and confirmed that the stones were embedded with some sort or arcane energy. Boris and Gurn had a dwarf summit that resulted in the following conclusion – Those rocks must be hiding treasure from us. A rope was tied to Boris and he crossed the threshold. Stepping across all seemed fine until he looked over his shoulder to see another tunnel descending into the inky darkness rather than the rest of B-Team – “whoops”. On the other side, of reality, “oh oh” as the rope fell to the ground before the stone line. They could no longer see their leader. What to do? What to do?

The rest of the herd stepped across the threshold. “Hey guys, I got a bad feeling about this”, Boris both happy and worried that the team was reunited. “Looks like there is only one way to go and it just happens to be down”. The passage was more of a tube and its extent would not be determined today. The hobos marched as the hours blurred ever deeper. The tedium was broken as a group of ghoul-like entities vomited up from the deep depths. They battled the creatures and then marched on.

Lumpy Gravy (Session 226)

SESSION 226 (Side Session): Siege on the Gangrenous Pt. 3 – Lumpy Gravy

Meanwhile up on the surface world: The B(oris)-Gang try to return to the village of the Gangrenous Orks but encounter a stinky obstacle.

Day 154 (14.23 Liwil): A good night’s rest with the Knights of the Basilisk in their keep was refreshing and came another healing session with the high priest of the Cult of the Basilisk Nihes Mes. This was followed with a lovely breakfast. Boris knew there were things to be completed so they packed up and prepared for the hike back to the slate mine and then back to siege warfare.

Day 155 (14.22à14.23à14.22 Slate mine): The march to the mine took five hours. The gang decided to stay the night as they were still a couple of hours away from the rocky orc lair.

Day 156 (14.22à13.21): Another clear and cold day is another good day for war. They marched west into the orc blighted hills. About a mile out from the Orc-Rock the already cold day became a little colder as a frosty mist rolled down from the hills between. Feeling the bite they all tightened their cloaks just a bit.

It was this distraction that allowed a host of ghasts and ghouls break into a fork formation and catch our hobos flat-footed. It was a sizable host, two units flanking with a soon to be determined spell casting boss ghast with body guards coming head on. Ghouls charged and the boss let loose a lightning bolt. This was already a ghastly situation and it took to an immediate downward spiral. The boss had both cover and a fine choice of magic. He followed up with confusion that addled Sasha, Sloth, Wendull and Willy before gleefully launching arcane bolts with abandon. Then the press of ghouls began taking effect, Gurn, Camillus and Sloth were taken out of the fight from the ghoulish touch. Raul and Rammer were able to hold the press while Boris leapt out of the fray to engage the boss ghast. With this the tide began to shift and attrition began to bite the undead. The gang won without any casualties but they took a serious beating, Wendull, Gurn and Camillus were in critical condition. There would be no raid today. Wounds were bandaged and the corpses looted – which resulted in an unexpected payday. Afterwards they made a hasty retreat back to secure lands.

They went wee wee wee all the way back to Liwil.

Day 157 thru 163 (14.23 Liwil): Convalescing for seven days in the absence of clerics. On the morning of the eighth they would once more set out to finish the job – KILL the Gangrenous.

I Spy a Brine Lord (Session 225)

SESSION 225: The Tomb Keeper

Meanwhile and yet in the future our bums are deep deep underground. A forgotten tomb in a lost world. Stuff is crazy.

Day 158 Continued (12.20/0605): After some time with the ghost of first mate Luvous they agree to retrieve his bones and deposit them in his sarcophagus. Afterwards, rather than going deeper Ding-We suggested that it was time to fall back to the ‘dry zone’ as the tide was coming. He added an additional spin, “Let us go back to the painting room”. Carla found this a little odd as the wizard had originally wanted nothing to do with that chamber. The return journey to the eastern sector of the tomb was uneventful. Entering the gallery. “Don’t go to far, I’m working on something”, directed the mage. He launched a pair of fireballs into the chamber resulting in a conflagration through most of the chamber. The outcome was the destruction of most of the paintings. Three remained the seaside city, an octopus and a painting of a sphinx.

The had already established that the City was innocuous so Steve approached the octopus image. Six tentacles reached out for the fighter…”He he he he he that tickles”. Our gourmand was likely being inappropriately touched by the tentacles and liking it. He pulled back and the tentacles returned to the painting, “I liked that!” “Human resources won’t”, pointed out Bimbles as he pulled out his harassment documentation forms. The one remaining painting was of a sphinx, Carla and Dolec decided to approach with caution. The painting spoke a riddle – “UGH” from many hobo voices. The actually got this one right – “Correct! You may ask me three questions”. “UGH” from many hobos once more. They were able to come up with two questions. Amazingly both providing valuable information. First, the fire and frost giants were not seeking vengeance. Second, slaying Abyzou in and of itself was not sufficient to solve the blight. “UGH” this time mostly just Carla and Ding-We as the rest of the gang had grown bored.

Afterwards the chamber was searched. An anomalous portion of wall was discovered behind one of the now incinerated paintings. It was a secret door and it lead to a chamber packed full of treasures lost to the ages. There was much rejoicing and looting. This was exhausting and the tide had now likely submerged, partially, a good chunk of the tomb so it was rest time.

Day 159 (12.20/0605): The rest cycle passed without incident. The gang set out once more this time towards the corridor near Luvous’s chamber. It lead to a large cavern that had a narrow natural bridge, plank, spanning the water filled lower portion. The bridge was going to be a hazardous traverse so Bunny had to do some prep work to facilitate a system to prevent anyone going over into the barnacle and jellyfish filled waters. Bunny got her rigging setup, with no real help from Saff, and the rest of the gang began making their way to the door at the far landing.

Brine Lord Cassidy thought this would be a fine moment to introduce himself.

There was something way not right about him.

Emotionless milky eyes transfixed bunny from beneath a skull adorned helmet from which tentacles and froth spilled down his chest.

(Cassidy by Squiggy)

He lashed out at our two gals with arms that were twisted masses of even more tentacles. Saff and Bunny are slippery buggers even when flat-footed. They split. Saff buzzed over the now jellyfish roiling waters as Bunny stepped off the landing, thank the Grey Mouser for sticky shoes! The rest of the band were in a tough situation. Steve activated his ring of jumping and Rhags just ignored good sense and ran at the brine lord. Steel bit down into Cassidy showing marginal effect, he just did not seem to care as he flailed his tentacle-arms. However, the Brine Lord was also having negligible effect on the tanks and moved to a tactical repositioning. The corpse Cassidy disappeared into the darkness of the chamber beyond.

They gave chase.

Destruction Deferral Program (Session 224)

SESSION 224 (Side Session): Siege on the Gangrenous Pt. 2

The B(oris)-Gang battles their way through the village of the Gangrenous Orks until forced to fall back so as to protect rescued prisoners.

Day 152 Continued (13.21/0404à14.22à14.23): The rough-hewn steps lead to the common area of the Gnasher Clan orcs. It showed all the signs of a hasty vacating of the premises. They crept in through a common room dimly lit by the remaining embers of a disturbed fire. Through and down a corridor. Ramrod was bringing up the rear and caught sight of a band of pig-men slinking into an ambush from the rear. The jig appeared to be up but there was also another group of orcs coming from a side corridor in front of the group. The fight was on and it was a battle on two fronts. I could wax poetic but I ain’t a poet. The battle was bloody but even our B-Team are potent murderers. Once their chieftain fell the remaining member of the Gnasher clan made a hasty escape into the darkness. After cleaning their blades the gang looted the premises and moved along to the next sector of the village.

They path lead to an arena ringed with cells the walk there uneventful as it appeared that the orcs were still regrouping. Ramrod began inspecting the cells. Many were empty but for filth but five were not. Three contained horrible creatures. One of which was a manticore that required some awkward dodging from our limpy thief to avoid a bunch of tail projectiles. There was also an owlbear and a troll that were ignored for the time being. The final two cells actually contained humans, junior Knights of the Basilisk clinging to life. George and Henri the remaining survivors of a waylaid patrol. Boris realized that these two broken lads would be a gift to the beastmen if they pushed further so he called for the suspension of activities. They would return to Liwil with these rescues immediately. Just before leaving Rammer released the troll in hopes of causing some mayhem. The orc forces were still in disarray and the retreat was unopposed. They made it back to Liwil by late afternoon.

B-Team was hailed as double heroes upon their return with the squires. That evening they were the guests of honour within the dining hall of the knights. Baldicar Ma the high knight spent much time speaking with Boris and Raul regarding the state of the local lands, in particular the reduction in the beastmen menace. Baldicar’s daughter arrived late and openly voiced her displeasure with the absence of an alliance with the fair folk of the Pallid Fields. Baldicar admitted to his concern that an alliance with the Fair Folk was a double edged sword. The Fae could be great allies but they could also retract favour on a whim and as such mortals must be very cautious. He closed the conversation by saying that the point may become moot very soon as our band of hobos have been unrelenting in their eradication of beastmen both in the local lands and those beyond. “ You have brought security unseen in generations and have juggled the interest of both man and fae. Allowing us to look to interests other than simply fighting for survival. You have our favour”. Dinner turned to pleasant conversion and repast into the evening.

Day 153 (14.23 Liwil): A good night’s rest with the Knights of the Basilisk in their keep was refreshing and came with another healing session with the high priest of the Cult of the Basilisk Nihes Mes. This was followed with a lovely breakfast. Boris knew there were things to be completed so they packed up and prepared for the hike back to the slate mine and then back to siege warfare. George and Henri thanked them one more time for the rescue, offering Boris a jug of rum that he happily slid into his pack. They marched out and then decided to turn back and rest for one more day. “I seem to have space for a little more food”. Sloth wholeheartedly agreed.

Siege on the Gangrenous (Session 223)

SESSION 223 (Side Session): Siege on the Gangrenous PART 1

The B(oris)-Gang pushes into the village of the Gangrenous Orks.

Day 152 continued (13.21/0405/0504/0404): Moving through the orc stained wasteland the sub-hex clearing was completed with ease. As morning began to wane they marched towards the box canyon opening that would surely lead to the Village of the Gangrenous Orcs. This frontal assault a day after the shenanigans presented a pig-man force ready for mayhem whom once again cared nothing about white flags. The tanks worked their way up the path to the gate as arrows rained down and then burning oil rolled down the sloping trail to the village palisade to slow the advance. Willy disappeared after Agolloch took control and erred in the teleport. We thought he was dead, but Ramrod found him inside a building. Agolloch had missed the roof top target and ended up midair inside of the structure. Willy was roughed up but alive.

The orcs were not willing to die at the gate and the losses were mounting for them. The orcs used copious burning oil to cover their retreat. They disappeared from sight leaving the hobos to dig them out of their holes.

The village overall was marginally illuminated even during the day. It was unwilling to give up its secrets even with an invisible Ramrod observing from a roof top. They decided to explore the structures to the west of the gate (area 2).

Entering a warehouse like structure, full of rubbish, they encountered their fist sub-clan defense force that vomited forth from a large hole in the back of the building. A horde of orcs and a pair of ogres defended a crude barricade that just could not stand. A bunch of them darted back down the hole. Once more leaving it up to our gang to pursue and they did.

Descending into the earth they entered the lair of the Gnasher Clan.
