I'm so Glad He is Among Us (Session 348)

SESSION 348: Fungus For All

While plans fermented the goobers plunged back into the depths to pass the time.

Day 867 (Dry Gulch): Today ended up being a planning and recuperation day. Carla communed with her deity and divined certain clarities relating to the source of diabolical influence within the lost undercity. This resulted in the identification of resource shortfalls. The resolution would require Chung-Li flying back to Gormandia. Things were argued out. Tomorrow actions would be taken. For now the plan had to ferment.

Day 868 (Dry Gulch & Beyond): At dawn Chung-Li recited an incantation and took to the air while the remaining goobers decided to return to the underworld in search of another treasure (map).

“Weeee imma Elf!”

After the poisonous mayhem of the last delve Carla would be on hand for quick remedies. For no reason in particular they decided to explore the burrow entrance to the underworld from the sewers, rather than directly from tower.

Back down in the sewer. The walk to the hole in the wall was uneventful. Whatever first dug into the sewers was ages gone and that was probably for the best. The tunnel ranged from 5 to 10’ feet wide. Showing evidence that other things had widened the passage after its original creation. About twenty minutes later the tunnel opened into a cavern. Classic. Stalactites and stalagmites aplenty. It would have been challenging moving through the cavern but there was a clear, monster, highway that had worn down/ broke through the stalagmites. This helped movement but also set the path as the piercer drop in zone.

Suzie and Kat did not like the introduction as both were unpleasantly punctured. After the big drop we had to either take a break for an hour so that the piercers could get back into attack position or just nuke them. Death by hobo it was. Carla quickly patched up the two girls and they pressed on.

The piercer zone opened into an even larger chamber that was the gateway into an expansive fungoid forest. Like every good underworld forest they were greeted by a lot of sneaky ambulatory fungi. Shriekers and a couple of violet funguses hiding in the midst.

Charles and Boris walked up set off the alarm and triggered the subsequent encounter with a gang of belligerent underworld ogres. All in all just another day at work, cause a mess leave a trail of blood. The ogres were nice enough to be carrying a reasonable amount of loot.

Deeper into the forest the fungal forest height began to infill and exceed heights of six feet. Insects of nearly ordinary size were plentiful, creeping and buzzing about. An(other) alcove. Instead of a beetle tended trap we had a pond occupied by a watery fiend.

This guy was more than a bit of a bugger as it simply kept reforming after being smashed. Boris would wack it down then turnaround only to be attacked by the ever returning weird. Eventually Carla figured the right magicks to send the spirit packing for good. There was some loot, gems and jewelry of the long forgotten dead, to be pulled from the now waterless recession.

Cleaning up and stowing away was completed, they then marched deeper into the fungal forest in search of the unknown (and a chamber that looked like a butt).

C'mon this has Gotta be Crotch Pot Cooking(Session 347)

SESSION 347: Murder Juice Injection

Just another day dodging death in the underworld.

Day 866 Continued (Under and Somewhat Adjacent to Dry Gulch): Arriving at the observation ledge all was quiet and dark. There was a simple base supply station and four well installed hooks positioned appropriately behind the ledge. Suzie informed the gang that they overlooked a kidney-shaped cavern. To the SE side were two passages and the SW sphere was believed to be a closed system. It was decided they would go SW.

The cavern was on the warm side and somewhat moist. The ground was broken earth which either housed small puddles or the formative mushrooms of a future fungoid forest. The back side of the region housed a large pond that ended up likely being a giant mutant frog sex club. The arrival of our hobos awoke the rapacious amphibians. They are nasty and all but they is just two-foot frogs. With the challenge addressed Dolec searched the pond for loot as others chopped up frog bits for Suzie and her friends to experiment with.

The frogs, it seems, had eaten an adventurer before. Dolec pulled out the remains largely just the central core which had been protected by some quality armor. After inspecting and looting the remains the gang were pretty happy they got some good and useful stuff.

They travelled to the other side of the cavern and chose the more southern exit passage. The tunnel went for about a mile before opening into another cavern. Mushroom count was rising. There was a large nook/alcove in the chamber, it was packed with much larger mushrooms averaging more than four feet and moderately packed. It was a cultivated mushroom lure-you-to-your-doom trap. The mushrooms had caretakers a pack of voracious giant (4’) tiger beetles. They had big nasty mandibles and knew how to use them.

Tiger Beetles: The Deadliest Insect Sprinters.jpeg

The beetles could also navigate the assemblage without obstacle allowing them to very quickly be all over the hobos – Biff in particular, I guess them bugs like their meat green. They got through the battle before any calamity and ended up with both long lost jewelry and a bunch of larvae that could be valuable or maybe trained.

As underworld luck would have it the battle and subsequent looting and junk attracted other life from beyond in the darkness in the larger cavern.

This being when things start getting mucked up.

The noise and light attracted a bunch of giant toads. They were both giant and brightly coloured, not a good sign. One got a bite in on Gord and he began to froth profusely from the mouth s his eyes bugged out. He was poisoned and dying a painful death. The big kids moved to quickly eviscerate the latest crop of malevolent amphibians as Katre distributed an antivenom tonic to the spasming ranger. The toads were quickly chopped up but then somebody decided that possibly harvesting the poison glands would be cool.

Once more the passage of time in the underworld is a calculated risk.

Dolec was on guard and he caught site of ants, real big ones just outside his light radius for good detail. He thought that throwing some food towards the insect(s) would be recognized as good will. Well, for lots of things that would be true but things played out differently. You see, the ants were just generally scavenging the local and had not picked up ‘smelled’ the pheromones of murder but when Dolec threw down the food it brought an ant’s curious and constantly working antennae into murder pheromone range and that set off the army’s dinner sensors.

Dolec saw his error quickly and fortunately during the processing window for the ants nervous systems to kick in. He threw down a bunch more grub before yelling to the gang to run, “Retreat! Back to the tower today is turning on us”. The ants did not follow.

Now things got messier. About three quarters of the way back to the kidney cavern our troupe were ambushed by a team of crab spiders. Dropping from the ceiling the arachnids quickly knocked out the support staff. Biff, Suzie, Kat and once more Gord were on the ground gasping for breath as the venom caused their throats to swell shut. However, once Versamage and the tank boys got down to work the spiders were not long for the world.

In defense of the classic D&D saving throws : r_osr.png

Now there was a problem. Four down and only two apparent remedies.

Biff and Suzie were given antivenom while Kat was given gaseous form after being put inside a well-sealed sack, BoB was then given a potion of strength so that she could evac the ranger from the underworld with her super speed. BoB’s mission was a wildcard as Gord could die at any moment. Things worked out. Katre did not die while in gaseous form, nor did she float away and BoB was able to get Gord to Carla for poison neutralization. Kat received the same when the potion eventually wore off.

Nobody like dying and near mortal events are kinda seen in the same light. Today, heck the last few hours, Gord almost died twice. He appreciated the pay and the company but he did not like the taste of his own mortality he announced his moral failure, “Thanks for everything but I got some thinking to do, maybe learn how to play guitar..”.

Spooky Goo (Session 346)

SESSION 346: Who Ya Gonna Call? MurderHobos!

Wherein we unexpectedly turn around and resolve something wicked before returning to where we began.

Day 865 Continued (Under Dry Gulch & Beyond): All righty, lets hit the cavern network. Hmm maybe not. We turn around and go back topside and get new directives from the Green Queen. Boris and the cleric join the crew to investigate the supernatural occurrence in the lost library. After more than a little buggerin’ about (at the big settling pool), the big kids were pressing into the library.

The entity was a wicked and hateful ghost librarian. Horribly evil when she died, laughingly under a bookcase, now just… really, really a bad rotten bitch.

Elite Creature Collectibles unveil high-end Ghostbusters' Librarian Ghost statue at SDCC - Ghostbusters News.png

Unfortunately for her she was facing the C-team. Carla plain ignored the horrific greeting while the rest (Charles, Boris, Cung-Li) were simply professionals. The opening aura of fear washed over the unit and then they got to business. Carla brought down the sacred light of TMB as the other mooks leapt to action. The key to success was not screwing around. Charles surged, Franz screamed to destroy the apparition. Boris was just behind as Chung-Li released a salvo.

And, it was over.

The wicked spirit exploded into motes of disintegrating ectoplasmic goo.

Charles and Boris ended up with a goodly amount of snot coating but they paid it little heed.

There was a ghost. This is Ectoplasm : r_southpark.png

With the ghost smote we moved onto the looting of the lost library. Books, scrolls and treasure maps not bad at all. With the help of Franz (and Charles) during the looting time there was also some x-raying vision. It seemed that the library was the sealed chamber adjacent to the guild of silence offices. They collected their stuff and began to fall back to the cavern entrance adjacent to the tower. Just before plunging into the unknown Carla decided to take a look at the treasure maps. One of them appeared to be located in the lost sewers. Why not check it out?

They found and it was worth the effort. Hidden under a heavy oiled tarp was a chest and it was packed full of gems and jewelry. Big pay day. This was not sorted until they had dropped the chest on the table at the Inn at the end of the day. Biff gave a cheer as he correctly foresaw the arrival of one of the intermittent pay days.

The chest was absolutely loaded. The treasure map was wicked awesome.

Prior to this party, the gang made an official move to put a purchase offer on the abandoned house and the empty property immediately north of it (6,000 gp). They had plans dontcha know?

Day 866 (Under Dry Gulch): The day began with rain and breakfast. Suzie came a little late but was happy to announce she could adventure today and that they could use the tower entrance to cave system. She showed up with a little thank-you gift from the Guild for nuking the ghost, she kept it of course. Boris and the Green Chick had other things to do (like fart around) but Lady Versamage was itching to stay limber.

Into the Pit!

Beyond the ‘not so secret door’ was a narrow passage that would eventually lead to an observation ledge. The walk would be uneventful.

Hopefully something wicked will be awaiting our arrival.

Screw you and your Ectoplasm & Another Stupid Story (Session 345)

SESSION 345: The Rats have a Bolt Hole & Oh, this is Something New ain’t it?*

This combo plate of two short sessions finds trouble, portents missed, big trouble, bigger escape and then then the unknown. The finer details of such somewhat scrambled…

Day 863 Continued (Dry Gulch): Back to the tower of wizardry they marched with the three captives. Once Suzie reported back to Master Thyber he had the Guild of Silence show up in sort order and take the brigands to holding. Someone was fixated on ensuring the ethical treatment of the baddies. Why? We ain’t really sure. Nevertheless the Secret Service agents agreed not to kill or leave them permanently crippled.

They then went off to find the house from which the Red Foot’s were operating.

Wow, it was like right there, under everyone’s nose kitty-corner from the guild of swords house. BoB figured the obfuscated entry and enter they did. Charles and Dolec almost fell into the floorless joint but both stopped on the correct dime.

A little work later a bunch of them had descended the thirty feet down into the undercity. Charles opened the far door triggering a trap that resulted in a minor failure of rocky materials around the door frame. Beyond was the brigands supply chamber and a passage that went further into the unknown.

Interesting.

The day was now getting and Dolec and Suzie had not done any you-know-whating for a while. “Shut it down. We is gonna check in with the Bosses and get some relaxing in”, Dolec hollered as Biff gave him a knowing punch in the spine. There was some attempt to curry favour with the council that evening but it seemed that they had their own priorities our hobos just weren’t all that special.

Day 864 (Under Dry Gulch): Once more creeping towards the upper pit hub zone as they entered from the house rather than the tower. In the long passage from the house area they encountered a lone individual, whom used a light stone to obscure his identity. It was a Guild of Silence member, the Master in fact. He was cagey about revealing anything and disappeared shortly after, “Take a snack before continuing”.

After the short rest they pressed on back to the secret door that hid this particular passage. They hung a quick turn and threw a bunch of flaming oil into the trapped mold chamber. They next decided to return to the sewers via the pit trap.

Making their way from the big pool to the other pool on their way to the scribe area we had another great ambush. The thing, a floating beaked brain with tentacles grabbed Biff.

The tentacles must have been covered in a paralytic as Biff stopped struggling almost immediately. It began to float away with its meal. Charles, Dolec and BoB pursued it hard trying to prevent it from getting away. The brain sought solstice from attack overtop the settling pool. BoB is more than just a silent ninja she is a missile-murderess and popped the brain thing. Its lifeless body fell into the pool and immediately released the paralyzed Biff whom sunk like a brick. “Oh Oh…”. Fortunately, someone had a water breathing potion that resolved the problem. During this time Suzie collected samples from the corpse. Dolec could foresee the evening’s time with his gal pal being usurped for research…

Eventually returning to the scribe/ librarian quarters. There were two areas left to investigate. The first lead to a kitchen still occupied by its staff, the three of which were now very much undead. Eat sword death chefs!

The second was atop a near vertical thirty foot stairwell that ended at the backside of a false wall. Charles used Franz’s x-ray vision power to scan beyond the wall. The sword saw what appeared to be a library, a room with lots of book cases. One of the book cases, conveniently, the one on the other side of the secret door had fallen ages passed and appeared to have crushed someone underneath. Wimpy book keeper. Dolec and Chung-Li attempted to deliberate but the unseen spirit of a one-legged wizard pushed them forward – “Nothing to be concerned about. Go Go Go!” Dolec pulled open the door.

Day 864* Continued (Under Dry Gulch & Beyond): The gang pushed into the lost library over or around the toppled bookcase and scrunched skeleton. As their eyes panned around the chamber a deep coldness began to rapidly coalesce. Dolec, now a fellow with a gal and a seasoned murderhobo, had a sinking feeling of dread, “Run! Red alert! Escape!”.

No one questioned him they just started jumping into the near vertical stairwell injuries be damned. Above and behind came an unworldly scream. The, likely, effects of which they had avoided in the barest of moments.

“Time to get the hell out of here?”, Chung-Li looking towards Dolec as he arose to his knees from the hobo pile.

“Ya. That was something wicked and we’re just screwin’ about”, Dolec stated calmly NEARLY pulling the plug on this almost catastrophic day.

“Hey, why don’t we check out the caverns?”

“Hmmm couldn’t be worse than whatever undead spirit that was rising there”.

“Nope. Tots better stuff coming”.

The group made there way back to the big pool then back up the trap hole and then down the passage they had been previously ambushed that lead to the Red Foot encampment.

Something was amiss.

The spiked door was no longer open, once more magically sealed.

One of the irons lay on the floor giving no hint to the cause of failure. Kat ‘knocked’ the door once more and they began pouring into the house hole chamber. It seems that the likely cause of the door spike failure was caused by another horde of hook horrors.

Fighting ensued.

Day 865* (Under Dry Gulch & Beyond): The gang not getting any special treatment from the council snuck into the abandoned house and down into the underworld. It was time to find out where that passage beyond the Red Foot’s supply depot would lead us.

Goobers in our Pockets (Session 344)

SESSION 344: Dungeon Dork Powers Activate

Working their way through the dungeon the first alternate ingress/ egress is discovered, right under everyone’s noses.

Day 862 Continued (Still Under Dry Gulch): Moving from the pit trap chamber there was a few choices in direction. The first of which lead to another section that ended up being Guild of Silence territory. They first came to a chained, barred and inscribed door. Definitely something here but they moved on down the corridor coming upon a batch of guild members chilling in the ‘lunch room’. We were very close to having a situation until Suzie was able to diffuse. The gang asked about the runed door as they retracted from the ‘no-go zone’, “Been like that longer than any of us remember. Better to leave well enough alone”.

Returning to where we started.

By this point the day was wearing on it was time to return to the wizard tower.

They were ambushed en route.

Dirty brigands with red-stained shoe soles – It was the Red-Foot gang!

It was a reasonable ambush from some distance resulting in the front liners getting a bit pin cushiony, BoB in particular. Once she got out of the way Charles and Dolec got to work and steamrolled the twits.

The mooks had some nice stuff on them, a bunch of gems and some obviously looted ancient armor and shield. Gord happily suited up in the former that was wonderfully stamped and embossed leather of Skeldrane origin.

The final leg of the trip was uneventful. Everyone made their way to the tavern for dinner and a couple of pints before retiring early. Tomorrow would be another delve.

Day 863 (Under Dry Gulch): Once more the long walk and climb to the ‘pit trap’ chamber. We really needed a better entrance but the Guild of Silence would not give out a hall pass. The first new room was empty but there was a door and passage. The door was interesting as it had been spiked shut. The passage lead to a low ceiling chamber due to the basement floor of a building. There was a trap door above a pile of garbage. Charles went in to check things out and ended up getting swarmed by rats. More irritating than anything. The trap door seemed to have a significant weight on it preventing opening. The trash pile had a real nice topaz in it, Charles was pretty happy. Backtracking they opened up the sealed door. A long passage and notably ‘fresher’ air. It lead to the Cleft. Chung-Li and Dolec did not feel like creeping about inside the rift and turned the crew around.  There was another passage to explore. Hey look! We have just been ambushed by brigands once more. This group was a little larger and seemed to have some higher ranking dudes. Katre was on the ball and knocked out the fodder with a sleep spell. The boss types saw the sky falling and turned tail. They got away but we now had a trio of captives for better or worse.

Time to head back topside to dump the chumps.

Stuck by the Jams (Session 343)

SESSION 343: Wiz Upgrade but mostly wasting time

Well, fire did the job. Back to our previously scheduled slinkin’.

Day 860 Continued II (Still Under Dry Gulch): Fatigue was soon to set in. The gang had to resolve the obstacle or, likely, overnight in the sewers. In truth not really an unusual challenge for our core group, shit happens when you are delving. However, Dolec’s having gills issue seemed like something the Green Messiah should look at.

“Hey. We have not tried fire have we?”.

“..No we have not, and it is often the great cleanser”.

With that Chung-Li and Dolec had a plan to address the ochre coloured horde of ameboid things.

Fire worked real good. Twenty or so minutes later the gang had successfully made the rush back to the base of the wizard’s tower.

Grandeal was very concerned with the whereabouts of Suzie. Quickly kicking out the hobos before discovering that dream girl wizard had made it back from the under-town with just a bit of upset stomach.

Day 861 (Dry Gulch): Day of rest*. Dolec used this time steal away Miss Hotpants from the community contenders. Fortunately for him his gill mutation seemed to have receded overnight really helping his cause. None of saw nor heard what Dolec did but the end result was hook, line and sinker. Smitten they were.

Day 862 (Under Dry Gulch): Back to work with our new hot wizardess as the news had gotten out about Dolec & Suzie – K-I-S-S-I-N-G!

Grandeal would not be playing with us anymore. No one seemed to mind. Suzie was the superior magician in all the best ways.

The mob slunk their way back to the base of the pit trap and made the way back up to the ‘first floor’.

Now what?

I'd Buy that for a Golden Shekel (Session 342)

SESSION 342: Just Another Afternoon in a Sewer

That ain’t normal is it?

Day 860 Continued (Under Dry Gulch): Into the large setting pond chamber…Nothing happened beyond a sense of dread. Walking around the edge of the large pool. There was two other sewer lines (a bigger one and a similar to the arrival tube) and a short stairwell leading up to a ‘wall’.  They choose the passage similar to the arrival tube. There were tracks going that way the wizardling pushed to discover the fate of Suzie Hotpants

I told ya she stood out in a crowd.

Oh ya!, Dolec and Charles working Grandeal’s dream gal

They came to another settling pond along with another line out. This area did not come with a sense of doom so Charles and Dolec came up with a plan to dredge the pool for loot. The plan was reasonable, if slow, but it did not account for stirring up an occupant.

It was a mutant fish-man-creature. A sickly white eight foot catfish with four human like eyes, limb like flippers and a gross maw of lamprey like teeth. The two mooks dodged the sneak attack but their valor lead to a complication. On the fish-thing’s second attack Dolec was dragged into the pool. The fighter sank like a lead balloon to the muck covered bottom twenty feet down. Normally this should result in a dead drowned hobo but the things bite had an immediate mutagenic effect on Dolec. Gills sprouted out of his neck from just below his jaw to his collar bone. This would make the present situation far more manageable but the long play is another matter entirely. When the creature was killed it immediately began to break down into a foul goo. The junior seer quickly collected some of the vile stuff into one of his component jars for later investigation.

Dolec did some more sifting of the bottom of the tank and came up with some coin and finding a submerged sewer line before checking out the stairwell on the farside of the circular chamber.

Once Dolec climbed out of the pool, seemed alright. The gills just sorta closed up and he seemed to be respirating normally. He did however make no attempt to dry himself in any way or get rid of the accompanying sewer stink for that matter.

The stairwell rose twenty or so feet before terminating in a wall. It did not take much to determine that we were on the not-so-secret-side of a hidden door.

The two fighters pushed ahead into a large chamber. They immediately noticed a change in the air, humid and fetid has become musty- it as a very pleasant change for all except man-fish he was notably ‘meh’.

The chamber was illuminated (ancient magical lanterns) and was revealed to be a meeting or common room. The central piece was a long table set and ready for a meal that by the dust never came hundreds of years ago. There were two doors and the one on the opposite side of the room was chosen.

A large, rectangular room covered in dust. The walls painted with frescoes depicting hooded figures hard at work writing and transcribing onto scrolls. An open set of stairs leads up, a closed door is set into the northern wall. Gandreal got excited convinced we had discovered the chambers of the librarian-priests of lost Lisau. He slowed things down facilitating BoB getting her fingers on the opening lath of a secret door. Hidden behind was a wing of the complex containing the sleeping cells of the scribes. Four smaller cells used to house three scribes apiece in cramped, spartan conditions and at the end of the corridor was the chief librarian’s chamber. During the initial exploration they encountered a nearly impossible to discover transparent and possibly intelligent ooze. Katre tried to befriend the goop. It might have worked . They moved on down the line.

Katre gave the door a ‘knock’ to counter the ancient magicks barring entrance.

In contrast to the other four cells it is richly appointed with thick rugs upon the floor and furnished with carved teak-wood furniture: an impressively-sized bed, a massive desk covered in papers, a tall wardrobe, and several stuffed armchairs are arranged around the room. The years have not been kind to the furnishings — moths have eaten the upholstery and rugs, and beetles have chewed the wood until it is riddled with tunnels and held together only by shellac. There was an unlocked box underneath the bed and it was full of loot it just required Charles to open it up like a blockhead. The poison on the needle trap was beyond its half-life aiding with Charles’s body fending of death with ease. Platinum coins, diamonds and an emerald studded necklace the team liked what they saw especially since they realized that they had travelled a good distance from the sewer entrance at the base of Thyber’s tower.

Returning to the foyer Biff suggested trying one more door they could always use a bit more pay. The door was locked. Seemed like a good sign. Dolec kicked it open. It was both a storage room and the final resting place of an unfortunate monk whom locked himself in (broke the key). The scribe was now a poltergeist which caused some shenanigans before being defeated. The room came up empty for the likes of Biff but the spellcasters were happy to discover a ream of quality vellum and two blank spell books clad in regionally appropriate basilisk skin.

They made their way back to the catfish thing pool and began moving back down the pipe connecting to the dread pool. Dolec-Fish was notably more relaxed in the dank and fetid environment.

They were about halfway back to the ‘dread’ pool when they encountered an ochre coloured ameboid. That moved towards the gang while manifesting (sprouting) a pair of pseudopods that appeared to be made for whacking. The gang paused for a moment to curse not having Raul the slime, ooze and mold expert with them.

They decided to go with the physical method.

It did not go according to plan.

Each impact caused the thing to pop out wee ameboid clones.

“Run Away!”, came the order from Dolec-Fish.

“Reverse Charge!”, Charles went barreling through the ranks spinning them to the new direction of movement.

Back in the previous settling tank chamber they realized they was now in a pickle.
