Operation Troll Extermination: Annihilation of the Wicked (Session 172)

SESSION 172: Operation Troll Extermination Pt.3: Annihilation of the Wicked

Day 7 arrived in our crowded camp (the whole mob was here for the mission) with a wind that quickly brought in clouds and rain. The wind was coming from the NE posing a planning irritation in respect to scent management. Nevertheless the operation had a greenlight and the horde marched off towards war.

Before they could adjust their trajectory, moving into the wind, the hobos scent was picked up by a wandering troll patrol. Due to their acute sense of smell the encounter intiated with a notable distance between groups. This presented a tactical advantage to the hobos who displayed a little too much power too quickly. After taking out the patrol leader half of the force turned tail. The hobos were held up just long enough by the remaining trolls for the runners to get a lead that the gang could not close on foot. Ding-We was committed to the assault and so he quaffed back an elixir of flight and then he and Saff flew off. He knew the chance of spotting the three remaining trolls was slim but he also knew where they were going. The rest of the gang turned back, it looked like their covert presence in the forest was about to be spoiled. The camp would need to be torn down and relocated or worse yet they may need to return to Helix until the whole neighbourhood cools down.

Luck appeared to be on Ding-We’s side, well maybe not luck but a maniac fairy with keen senses when her ADD doesn’t kick in and one understands Saffron’s jibber jabber. They got in front of the trolls and unleashed a freezing blast. The trolls were hurt, badly, and the attackers were in-between them and home which was nearly in sight. The trolls charged into melee. Not what Ding-We wanted but he had some tricks up his sleeve. With the severe damage from the ice blast not yet countered by their uncanny ability to regenerate Ding-We and Saff were able to drop the trolls permanently with the help of fire. Realizing that the corpses need to be addressed quickly to prevent the alarm from being raised Ding-We began to unpack his portable hole. Now came the proof that it was indeed a crazy fairy at his side and not luck. “BOOGERS!” The commotion attracted notice. A pair of trolls came charging in. Somehow yet again the two were able to down the trolls very quickly. Now there were two more corpses to stuff away. Ding-We got back to work. “MOAR BOOGERS!” “Oh come on!”, Ding-We exclaimed as two more guards rushed him. For a third time the two hobos brought down the green gangly flesh eaters. Ding-We was then able to get the hole opened and the now seven troll corpses into it and then escape.

Flying back to the rendezvous location Ding-We came to the conclusion that the assault operation needed to be carried out immediately. Even though the bodies were gone copious amounts of green gore had been sprayed all over the proverbial doorstep of troll town. It would be discovered soon by a returning patrol or a change in wind direction and then the alarm would be called. He figured they had two to three hours before this occurred. Sasha concurred and estimated that they could be in attack position within two hours if they hustled. “About face and march! Mission is Go!”

Nearly two hours later they were in position. Just on the edge of the forest along backside of the village. The soft hobos began climbing trees as Sasha reported back that the giant trolls were awake and bumbling about. “Engage!” Ramrod and Raul using powerful devices summoned two earth elementals that were then silenced and made invisible. The elementals then went off to begin smashing troll holes. The hobo horde then waited for the earthen giants to start the party. It came without sound, two hulking creatures popped into site and began thrashing separate troll holes. Soundless but seen by the green goliaths that let out roars of alarm. The hobos rushed in. Nara unleashing a mental attack that stunned two of the meat heads allowing for safe engagement. The battle had started and with it came wave after wave of gross green enemies.

The hobos early advantage began to wither as their shield wall (of sorts) clashed with more and more trolls that threw themselves with abandon at the hobos. Blood began to pool both green and red. Hobo teeth were flying like popcorn from an uncovered pot. Biff and Rhagnar had their throats ripped open, Dolec and Willy faltered under repeated blows as they guarded the two incapacitated warriors. The trolls began to encircle the group as a pair of giant two-headed trolls smashed Bunny and Sasha out of their tree perches. The battle was turning to one of attrition as even the troll villagers swarmed the intruders. The noose began to tighten. Our hobos realized there can only be death or victory and so they began to rain down fire and energy blasts even risking friendly damage in hopes of breaking the trolls. The tactic worked. With the acceptance of the tanks taking friendly fire they were able to pulverize the trolls at ground zero and the tide turned in favour of the hobos. Seeing opportunity the hobos surged.

Finally, standing upon a mountain of corpses and covered in green gore the assault on troll town was largely done. The leaders, the monstrous and all those that engaged were underfoot. Black clouds of smoke wafting across the battlefield as the bodies were burnt to prevent regeneration. They grabbed a breath before moving forward to finish cleansing the lair.

Operation Troll Extermination: Pre-Launch Initiation (Session 171)

SESSION 171: Operation Troll Extermination Pt.2 - Final Measures

The evening brought more strange and malicious visitors. A pack of creatures that at first resembled wolves with eyeless sideways mounted crocodile shaped heads that emitted a strange amber glow from fractured their porous skulls. They were odd, like really odd. Not animals but broken sticks and splinters bound together with a viscous sap. Prior to the attack we had heard the sound of falling trees throughout the evening this it seems was the call bizarre call of these wooden abominations as they triangulated the hobo camp. With the sound of breaking sticks the pack leapt with uncanny speed and agility over the palisade and into the camp. Game on. They were as unrelenting as they were unknown. The battle raged until it finished. Once more beaten up but still alive was our expeditionary forces what will tomorrow bring is the question.

Day 2 (since the other idiots returned to Helix to get the other other idiots): The next day the weather took a turn for the worse. An unnatural fog rolled in and with it a drizzle that lasted. The evening disturbance had buggered things up a bit so the gang decided to rest for the day. Finally getting around to considering cleaning up the piles of sticks and sap that had previously been the wolf things Sloth pointed out that the sap was stinky. This, of course, presented an opportunity for Felix to pontificate for far too long before getting to the point- this sap might just cover our scent. They would spend the next morning covering themselves in sap and splinters. Overnight the cackle of hyenas was heard.

Day 3: The fog and drizzle persisted. Today the stealth team elected to get back to the observation mission. It looked like the trolls had brought in reinforcements, both giant and two-headed trolls were observed. The return trip got a little dicey when Bunny and company almost ran into a troll patrol. Fortunately, fast acting Willy activated Agolloch and teleported the group to safety. That evening troll patrols were notable active.

Day 4: The bad weather stuck around. The spies once more set out to observe troll town. No close calls this time but they did observe a further complication. Clothed in rags that obscured any identification a hunchbacked human sized entity parlayed with the troll boss and then presented a line of hostages (owl-folk) to close whatever malevolent deal that they had struck. They then retired to the bosses office to do whatever it was that they were going to do, hostages and all. This time as the spies returned they had a less than close encounter with a troll patrol. Perhaps it was the sap stink or that the trolls were laden with the evenings spoils (kills) and were very close to home and were inattentive. Whatever it may have been allowed the sneakers to return to camp unnoticed. During the night hours a goblin gang was heard moving to the north, most likely along the pathway.

Day 5: The fog began to break and the drizzle appeared to be giving up as well. Today the sneaks went to examine the pathway to determine where the goblins were going. Sasha determined that they roughly followed the same trajectory as the gnolls but in a far less regimented fashion. It was beginning to look like the forces of chaos were not adverse to working together. It looked like there would be lots of work ahead if Carla and Ding-We wanted to secure these lands for colonization.

Day 6: Once more the weather was clear and once more the spies observed troll town and the rest of the gang rolled into camp. Once led to camp and settled in the reconnaissance group filled in the bosses of their observations. That evening the final plan of action was formulated.

Operation Troll Extermination: Setup (Session 170)

SESSION 170: Operation Troll Extermination Pt.1

With a plan the hobos moved to enact the first part, sending forth an expeditionary force to establish a base camp and commence with reconnaissance. Whole this was being conducted the rest of the hobos would be recovering from recent travels and preparing divine and arcane resources. Bunny, Sasha and Bob lead the first group back to the wilds to setup a camp. The journey was uneventful and Sasha found the best place she could in between the ancient trail and the troll base. Not too close to the trolls as their sense of smell was worrisomely acute.

Being far enough away from the trolls has its own challenges. You might be on a highway for other things that also are avoiding them gross rapacious regenerating greenies. During the first night things became messy. First a pair of cave bears crashed the camp. They were actually a distraction for their handler a mighty ettin that smashed its way in via Bunny’s pavilion. The camp was well smashed up but in the end it was our hobos dragging the weighty corpses into the forest.

The next day as repairs and improvements to the camp were initiated Steve and a few other tanks collected the horses and left once more for Helix to collect the rest of the group while the expeditionary force set out to get some recon done. Bunny, Sasha and Willy sitting in a tree S-P-Y-I-N-G. Their observations were going along quite nicely as they watched guard movements and the comings and goings of patrols. However, things often don’t go as smoothly as planned. It was not the trolls but a hideous old green crone that caught wind of our interlopers. She was faster than she was ugly and had vicious claws to match. Willy was forced to call on Agolloch to facilitate a necessary escape (major power: teleportation), they were no match for this lightning fast green bitch. Agolloch was irritated, that they were not slaying evil, but complied as it was guaranteed that much green blood would flow soon. The group made their way back to camp to discuss their findings and clean their wounds before they festered.

Murder Kings the Beginning (Session 169)

 SESSION 169: The Band Reunites

The trek back to Helix continued as Ding-We had daydreams of having his own wizard tower. Nothing unusual about that, we had simply been outside the footprint of the Land of a Thousand Towers for some time and territorial magicians had somewhat faded from mind. Either way, Sasha led the gang around the southern portion of the lake that should not be. They discovered the outlet, not quite a river but definitely more than a stream. As they began to ford the waterway they bumbled into a well laid ambush.

A gnoll war party had set up in the undergrowth on the far side of the bank. Archers sprung up and peppered the group as giant hyena riders leapt forth from the wings and by the sound of things a significant host more were preparing to attack. The hobos being of significant merit weathered the storm of arrows and prepared to counter hard and fast – there was no time for wasting when facing such a large host. Fortunately, the more vulnerable of our gang were well covered by the vegetation and well behind the bank of the waterway. Wands and rods were pulled producing a series of explosive effects. The front line of the gnolls were simply blown into little bits. The leader, a monstrous beast and obvious veteran of many battles did not like what conspired. The ambush and dreams of fresh humanoid meat had been derailed as our hobos held the line. The beast sent in the infantry to both die and provide a window of escape for the remaining forces. The riders and an unknown portion of the war band lept back into the forest. Finishing off the delaying forces along with getting the gang across the waterway gave a notable amount of time for the other gnolls to get a significant head start.

There was interest in pursuit but Sasha stated that the beastmen were probably very familiar with these lands and would be at an advantage with whatever they plan to do – escape and regroup or set a new trap. There were a few grumbles but then the group were reminded that with a little focus they all could be sleeping once more on a bed in the barracks after a night of drinking and eating with the B-Team and their little chums Brett and Germaine. After cleaning up they pressed on with a little intensity and did arrive back at Helix by early evening.

Back in Helix, the gang and some newbies had once more been reunited as Ding-We and Carla spoke of lofty new plans to carve out their own place in the wilderlands. To become Murder Kings & Queens. The first step would be to eradicate troll town. Drinks were drained as a plan was hatched.

On the Road to Murder(Session 168)

SESSION 168: Waking Up After a Fae party to Remember

Whew! What a party with a bunch of little bearded guys and forest critters. When they cut loose only a lunatic fairy named Saffron can win the race. As our party friends melted back into the forest Ding-We declared that the A-Team needed to return to Liwil as he had plans, massive plans. Sure sure. Sasha led the way along with her trusty co-pilots Bunny and Biff.

They came upon the remnants of what once was an orchard a ½ mile in from the river. “Interesting” mumbled Ding-We, “Delicious” exclaimed Steve with dreams of apples and roasted meat in his mind. The rest of the relatively short trip to Liwil was uneventful. Once there they checked their horses into the stable after a mild scolding for not keeping the hill ponys in tip top shape. Ding-We and Carla visited the alchemist, Saff disappeared to do things she would not reveal and Steve led the rest of the horde fell back to the tavern for repast. Once reunited they sent a message to the Basilisk Knights to request a meeting. It was at this time that the intentions of our newest hobos was determined. Dolec Da and Camillus expressed their commitment to our asylum. However, Greymin had other plans. He was a dwarf through and through full of greed and the burning need to dig. After hearing of the gold deposit in Dry Gulch he knew where he wanted to be. Awhile later they were met by the knight’s mage who agreed to listen to their plans as long as he was plied with the most expensive of spirits. Carla and Ding-We shared their plan to establish a stronghold in the vicinity and their hope of alliance and cooperation. Desmond Von Skripples the Thaumaturgist wished the hobos luck and once they had carved out their chunk of the wilds come on back for further discussion. “That cost more thans it was worths”, mumble slurred Rammer while looking at the empty top shelf bottle of spirits that he did not get enough of. The next morning the gang rode out once more. This time for Helix (where the rest of the tribe were last seen), it had been some time and they expected to have some steep bills to settle.

The plan was to travel around the bottom of the mystery lake rather than mucking about with the beastman hordes around the top that Desmond had enlightened the group of. Leaving the hills of the Basilisk region they re-entered the deciduous dominated forest between them and the lands of the Ironguard’s. “Next stop Helix!” gushed Rhags. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves these lands are wild” was Sasha’s response. “Bum-bum” was all Sloth had to contribute but it did earn him an ear rub from Saff and that was good.

They made their way through the forest until they began encountering numerous stautues of animals of exceptional qualities. “Shit burgers” – Ding-We. “Rhags are there chisel marks?”, worried Carla. “Nope”. “Sasha! Find a different path!”, yelled Dinger without yelling loud enough to attract any unwanted attention “You got it pop-in-fresh”. The band went hard to the south for a couple of leagues before correcting back to the northeast.

Before reaching the bottom of the lake (it actually did not occur until next session) the group faced a pair of challenges. The first was nasty nasty nasty sprites that dropped curse bombs a plenty. The hobos could not defeat sprite humor and so they ran hard to the jeers of turd sized fae. For some time afterwards Bimbles was forced to ride with a 2’ long nose. It was neither easy or pleasant as it kept catching the wind. To make things worse for Bimbles he and his horse fell into a sinkhole later in the day and elicited the attention of a local pack of wolves. At least the weather had been nice. They rode on for another hour after the wolf attack and then camped for the evening. It seems Sasha was right and Rhags now probably owes her a pouch of coins for being wrong. “Don’t count your leagues until they are behind, ya brick”.
