Something Wicked: Dread Ethel Matron of Murder (Session 201)

 SESSION 201: Fly You Fools!

There would not be any respite, the night would hold terrors and misery.

Day 93 continued – Unusual Mist (12.19-0504/): Camp was set and guards were as eagle-eyed as possible with the tendrils of the unusual mist swirling just outside the influence of the fire. It was the dead of night, that wicked pre-dawn time that a sorrowful melody drifted into the camp. Beguiling Ramrod. He stood up and began to walk towards the forest. Sasha ran up to him trying to stop him. He lashed out and she stepped away uncertain what to do next. What followed was a growing conga line (Rammer, Boris, Sloth) of mesmerized hobos lumbering into the forest towards doom. Doom I say! Strangely this was not enough for the group for them to wake Mason and Nara. The mistakes were mounting and then a portion of the beguiling singers dropped from the darkness to protect their prizes. Harpies they were. The attack gave the lead harpy, whom was still somewhere within the canopy of the wretched forest, time to lure our dumb hobos into the forest. Sasha, Biff and Dolec followed after dispatching the attacking harpies they were greeted by a pair of charging stag-men. Dolec was eviscerated and was dead before he hit the ground. This was all part of a larger and devious lair things were only going to go further downhill from here.

The next to fall was Sasha, beaten into the ground by a flesh golem. This was after another ambush trap by two giant rattlesnakes, an ewok like log smash and an exploding fire bomb. The golem was the first of two heralds of the dark force that made this twisted stand her lair – Dread Ethel Bonechewer was a bhannog. She was a hag-like giantess wrapped in rags that may actual have been made of human flesh, dried faces contorted in eternal agony still moaning as their spirits must still be trapped.  Gnarled, hateful and powerful she was, immediately liquifying the earth underneath the hobos making escape impossible. This was a fight to the death and we had already lost two. Boris used his ring of jumping to escape the muck but it put him on top of Dread Ethel. Boris was outmatched in his already injured state. He traded blows for the briefest of moments until Dread Ethel’s wicked claws raked his face removing an eye that she gobbled back while tossing aside his now limp body as a geyser of blood bathed her as it exploded from Boris’s now empty socket. Boris was mostly dead. Most certain to be fully dead if he did not receive healing immediately. Concurrent with this Nara was able to break the harpy grasp on Sloth and he entered the fray bringing down the first golem just in time for the second to show up. Dread Ethel then released a multi-fork strike of lightning bringing even more hobos within death’s reach. It is darkest just before the dawn but now the first rays of light broke through the canopy and just perhaps something was casting its light upon our hobos. They surged, as their lives did depend on it. Nara used her powers to unleash a devastating series of explosions to rip through the golem while Sloth carved off chunks of meat with his mighty blade. Biff and Mason swung into Dread Ethel with wild abandon almost blinded by the viscera and gore flying from both themselves and the hag. Then it was over.

Dolec and sasha were dead. Boris stabilized at death’s door. Sloth collapsed on the ground as the magicks that kept him standing faded, once more remembering that his body was already a burnt mess from the previous encounter with the stagmen shaman. They were smart enough to realize that one more surprise would be the end of them all. They crawled back to the wretched campsite of the Frog-God idol and prepared stretchers to make the immediate run for the Gormandia ferry. They prayed for no hinderances.

Yet Another Puncture Wound Massacre (Session 200)

 SESSION 200: Hammer Smashed Faces

Traveling through the misty forest reveals foes both gigantic and twisted aberrations. The dense forest is not willing to give up its secrets. Good pay but the day was a big circle.

Day 93 – Unusual Mist (12.19-0504/0503/0403/0404/0504): The gang awakes to a treacherous mist that has choked the forest from the ground to the canopy (at least). Moving north along the river presents the first mayhem of the day. A trio of Hill giants whom were at first undecided but were quickly convinced that mortal combat would rule the morning. Nara insightfully put up a barrier to protect the group just as the giants began lobbing stones at Mason (Note: this would be a tough day for the Lama of Yrrg) that deflected mostly harmlessly off of the psychic barrier. They were able to ground two of them but the third made a timely tactical retreat and pounded dust. The gang were not too concerned about the escapee as he chucked his treasure sack at Mason.

Moving along Sasha detected tracks – hooved and bipedal. They deliberated on the origin and figured minotaur. The truth would be revealed shortly.

Standing before the ominous mixed forest they looked for a point of entry. The trees were tight and twisted and the forest floor a tangle of brambles. They eventually found an opening, damn mist made everything more difficult. Pressing into the dense forest they moved down an alley that subtly transitioned into a cone like shape. They did not notice this, thanks to the mist that had picked up density within the twisted forest.

There was insufficient notice. Once again the mist obfuscated the details. They were pummeled by the smell of copper, no It was blood in abundance and then they were ambushed by stag-men. Our explorers had wandered into the beastmen’s lair and they had numbers. Charging and releasing ranged volleys as they tightened the noose around our hobos. This was followed be their holy stag raining lightening from above. Ramrod was invisible and outside the noose, he made towards the shaman but the going was slow as the beastmen were many in number and moving all about. Sasha was expertly camouflaged but this would only last so long. The creatures continued to squeeze while their holy stag thought it would be a good idea to start cooking some dinner and began to heat Sloth’s armour – “hot hot!”. As Sloth began to boil other injuries began to pile up and the beastmen kept piling on. Rammer and Sasha were finally in position and Boris activated his ring of jumping to join the fray with the enemy leaders. It didn’t go perfectly and Sasha was now circled but they were able to take out the chieftain and shaman. Sasha began to realize her mistake when the blood-crazed stagmen did not waiver – yet. Sloth had now collapsed nearly boiled to death. However, the fates stepped in and with mounting losses the beastman morale did break and they ran into the tangled mist-covered forest. Silly animals you were on the cusp of victory as many of our hobos were near collapse.

The opportunity was mostly utilized. The hobos could not help themselves to some looting as a stretcher was assembled for the still unconscious Sloth. Afterwards, it was decided to hightail back to where they had started today, at their camp site. Fighting their way through the forest they were once more fallen upon by a portion of the beastmen attempting a run and gun ambush. It did not work, their numbers were insufficient and the bloodied hobos dispatched them efficiently.

Returning to the camp site the day was now late and they would have to shelter until daylight. Moving at night with Sloth down was only a fool’s choice. Heck moving at night on the best of days is asking for trouble. They ate and began the rest cycle hoping for respite.

It had been a rough day but it really did pay well.

Winter is but a Metaphor to Warn Men that the Coming Cold has Many Forms (Session 199)

SESSION 199: Poop and other Undesirable Things

Shifting through the poop for loot and then ascending once more to the light. Returning to the ferry and then crossing the Blood River.

This time to explore to the north. Moving along the river a foreboding twisted mixed forest loomed to the west.

Day 91 – Continued (13.20-0503à12.20-0704): Well what do you do when a poop pile, perhaps decades in the making, sparkles? Well hobos go digging for corn…er loot. Steve and Gurn not only found a bevy of undigested gems but each incurred a rot grub to boot. The girls pointed out that the grubs were not the only reason they don’t root through mountains of feces but certainly contributes.

Further along the twisted passage ways of the behir lair our gang finds the treasure chest slightly singed and battered form the ages. It was in the clutches of another long dead loot hunter. Perhaps, we should be a little appreciative towards the behir for not allowing the treasure map to be a bust.

There was a king’s ransom in ancient coin. Steve loaded it into a sack threw it over his shoulder and with a new greater sense of leadership led the way out of the labyrinthine cavern. Satisfied the hobos made their way out of the chasm and double timed it back to the ferry site just in time for early supper.

Day 92 – Clear(12.20-07.04/0604/0603à12.19-0608/0607/0606/0605/0504): The day started out nice. The exploratory band make up was adjusted and the revised gang once more took the ferry across the Blood River on way to the next hex to the north. Late morning the group encountered a 14’ tall giant of ‘stony’ complexion. The giant known as Carl had a hefty sack and was open to dialogue. The longer the ‘little people’ pestered him the more irritated he became until he demanded tribute. After some deliberation on how to be the best possible cheapskates, Sasha presented a small pouch of gold and a tiny gem. Carl accepted her payment and declared she had paid sufficiently – “NOW the rest of you little people pay up!”. The very idea of everyone paying something in the order of 75 golden pieces was an offence our hobos could not tolerate. The toll would be paid in blood. Carl dropped his sack and took his massive stone club in two-hands and charged the bulk of the party – “I’m going to squish you little people like bugs”. After which he turned around and swung his club in a giant sized arc. Biff was creamed. He was lucky enough to get his shield up but the force still broke his arm and sundered his enchanted buckler. He fell to the ground as his compatriots swarmed Carl and showed him that he may have the guns but they had the numbers. Carl’s sack was not as full as it had appeared from a distance but there was still lots of coin and a few other interesting things.

Pressing on the mob entered the target hex (12.19). A black forest loomed in the central portion of the hex. It was decided to move along the edge that more or less coincided with the river. A couple of miles in an altar to a twisted frog-like thing was discovered. Mason declared it to be ‘Evil!’ and so Sloth smashed it. This resulted in the unexpected. A gaunt black and fiery horse appeared above Mason intent on opening up his dome like a ripe melon. After the surprising appearance of the black partially ethereal steed, that was solely intent on killing Mason, a rider began to materialize astride the foul equine. Yup, there was a fight timer before things got worse. Unfortunately for the nightmare even with it flickering between dimensions we had some heavy hitters in close range. The demonic horse could not stem the tide and by extension its rider could not get to this world before the steed was dispersed in an acrid cloud of smoke. It was getting late and Mason really wanted to make sure that the altar was desecrated properly so camp was set.

That evening it appeared as if a wind was moving through the trees around the camp and yet there was no wind. This unnerved the first watch but they could not definitively say that there was danger. Things became clear during the second watch as a tree, a large tree, seemed to now be present overlooking the camp.

“Was that here earlier?” “ahhhh..”

“Ho-ho-hum what do we have here hmmm? Wanderers in the woods it would seem. Who has old Bent-Stick discovered?”

It was a talking tree a treant to be specific whom had come to the conclusion that the hobos warranted further investigation rather than immediate smashing. A slow moving dialogue was engaged. Bent-Stick was a guardian of order in these lands that were ripe with chaos. His influence greatly diminished over the many many seasons as dark things pressed wit never increasing intensity. He warned of ‘The Watcher in the Woods’ before fading back into the forest.

“If your labours, and labours they shall be, come to a successful conclusion man will once more propagate in these lands pushing back the shadow and I can return to the North for more than just winter” his voice fading into the blackness of the forest. “A guardian…” mused Sasha. The rest of the evening passed without interest but the morning had something in store.

Session 200 would start off odd.
