Deep in the Jelly (Session 242)

SESSION 242: The Jelly Land Express

Further exploration inside the biggest jelly-fish ever.

Day 165 Continued (12.20/0605): As mentioned last time, Steve doesn’t think fast. Bunny however is a little more on top of things and she extended her magical rope to Steve before he fell down the jellyfish’s stingy tentacled esophagus, or whatever reasonable facsimile it was, to points unseen and unknown.

Looking down from the edge, even Steve thought there might be better things to do than plunge into the jellyfish’s throat. They cautiously made their way round the southern arc of the maw and were rewarded with the opportunity of egressing the mildly acidic stomach region. It was causing everyone some irritation. It was another side passage that lead to a chamber with two corridors and the location of the third and final tubeway to the surface. They elected to take the passage to the SE. It lead to a small chamber and continued on. Shells: Various sized shells are embedded in the jelly-like walls, ceilings and floors of the chamber, from giant conch shells to tiny crab shells in brilliant shades of red, blue, orange, and purple. Other shells glisten with iridescent swirls of intense colors ranging from peacock greens, creams, deep cobalt blues, and pinks. Tiny fish nibble at the shells, searching for food. Ding-We had the feeling that good stuff was here somewhere so as he directed the rest of the gang to look for the mundane he detected for magical properties. He had a hit. Embedded in the wall was a mask - created from a multitude of miniature shells of various colors. The face appears as a demonic skull with sharp edged triangular shells near the bottom of the mask. It was creepy but the wizard wanted his loot. He directed Rhags to get the thing out, “Oh, well now! If it isn't Captain Ding-We Perfect-hair! Aye Aye Captain!”. It took the Dwarf a good ten minutes to delicately remove the creepy thing but this extra time allowed the rest of the mooks to find some real nice shells and a handful of milky white pearls. Saff and Bunny saw great utility with such lovely items and quickly collected and split the items before Ding-We the treasure hoarder was any wiser. During this time a bunch of sizable jellyfish things floated by to investigate our presence but bounced off the bubble and disappeared into the darkness from which we came. Charles and Mason gave then a salute and then went back to slacking off.

They moved further down the passage and cane to another one of the gross folded sphincter portals. “Chumps first”, Rhags extending a hand to help shove Steve’s head in. He then pulled his arm through and gave the chamber a once over with his lightstone. Air Bubble: Crawling through the sphincter reveals an empty chamber with slowly rising water leaving 2’ of breathing space near the ceiling. Near the southern wall is a floating mass of jelly with shredded gelatinous tendrils barely clinging to the central blob. Giving the all clear the gang wormed their way in. The air when it mixed with the bubble was notably stagnant. The jelly blob was some sort of slain jelly-thing not the same as the big ones previously encountered but whatever jelly-things be jelly-things. A keen eye caught the presence of something inside the blob. A little carving later and they had another milky white pearl – for free! There was another jelly-door to the east. They pressed on.

Back where they had started at the base of the first tube slide just outside Gimpo’s sea squirt chamber. Gimpo was not home. They took the previously unexplored sphincter to the N by NE. A chamber choked with kelp and seaweed. The kelp was a little different then the variety found in Cassidy’s tomb but appeared to also be good for breathing assist. They were momentarily interested and then simply decided to exit via another portal at the back of the chamber. It led to a corridor arching to the NW. They came apon the second entrance tube (it was winding and of very easy grade) and continued along now moving W. There was a northern entrance to the stomach region but they decided to instead press further west. Another jelly-flap door. In went Steve and then the rest. Breach: Wood splinters float on briny water that fills this chamber (3’ deep). Shards of wood splinters jut out of the ceiling and walls, an oozing puss dribbling from the wounds. A gash in the ceiling sucks the air from the chamber creating watery ripples and a low howling sound. A floating keg jostles its way around the chamber. “Oh that has got to be rum”, enthused a sober Rhagnar. The hobo bubble caused the keg to precipitously drop proving that instead of rum it was a very unstable explosive – KABLAM!

Fortunately for the gang that the bubble had pushed the keg to the back of the chamber before it dropped and limited the blast effect to the frontline. The explosion further ripped open the gash and water was now beginning to enter the chamber from the outside. This would be noticed once the smoke made its way up and out. “Nothing left here, Steve go through that poop-hole over yonder”, was a little disappointed Rhagnar. A 60’ corridor ended in a large chamber.

Oysters: The gelatinous walls surrounding this chamber have a mix of dark and light greens, yellows, and splashes of pinks spiraling throughout, creating a vibrant, alien visage, that eventually meets purplish mussels mortared to the floor. Strange orange and reddish translucent blobs swim clumsily about the chamber near several giant oysters that line the walls. The blobs extend pseudo-pods to assist in movement as they consume stray fish and other tiny life forms swimming within the chamber. A sphincter of folded gelatin lies in the floor on the east side. The oysters quickly sealed tight when the atmospheric bubble entered their presence. The jelly-blobs were ignored as the bubble just pushed them away. Steve suggested that it must be very close to dinner time and one of these things would be a delicious choice. Carla and Bimbles quickly agreed, they were feeling a bit spent on the utility front. So Steve and Rhags carved out an oyster and then the mob made their way back to the gash chamber rather than descending deeper into the creature. Bunny sent her rope up the leaking and seeping wound. It was a short and easy climb to the surface. She called up the rest of the mooks and they went about a rest cycle while enjoying Steve’s latest creation, steamed giant oyster.

Day 166 (12.20/0605): After resting up Ding-We once more created an atmospheric bubble and they once more entered the jellyfish via the gash. The water level had notably increased a few feet and the trickle was now decidedly an inflow of water. Hmmm. Deciding to check out the NE section of the stomach and were shocked to find The Laughing Dolphin: The bow of a ship lies in a crumpled, splintered heap against the north wall with remnants of barnacle covered wood surrounding a bowsprit in the shape of an open-mouthed dolphin. Wisps of kelp dance underwater, failing to hide a single barnacle-covered door blocking access to the ship’s enclosed inner chamber amidst the wreckage. The door easily yielded, into splinters, to Steve’s metal boot. All sorts of debris and junk littered the interior but Steve’s eagle eye could not be tricked. There was also an intact chest. They rolled in. This disturbed the slumber of the long dead crew of the Laughing Dolphin. Skeletons arose from the debris to protect their treasure one last time. “Bah, these guys were bush league! And who the hell knows or cares who Daryl is. What sort of being would wear a dolphin ring definitely a human take the junk peg-leg”, grumbled our uncomfortably sober dwarf.

They decided to move along the northern arc of the stomach around the tentacled throat.
