Digging for Murder in Barrowmaze (Session 107)

SESSION 107: Back on Task?  (18NOV19)

So we got some much needed rest and recovery. Something(s) did try to get in but our pinions held fast in our tomb away from home. Patched up, mostly, we got back on task. Towards the entombed longship we slunk. Well almost. First we bashed down a wall to discover one of those ‘riddle rooms’. We maintained our track record and did the wrong thing. It was wet fighting some water elementals. Back on track, we made it back to where the ship lay waiting for some ingenious thieves.

We were last here months ago and no boss lair goes unpopulated for long. In this case an abomination had tunnelled up from the bowels of the earth. A colossal 18-legged spider like thing that vomited forth tentacles from its deadly maw. Dumbfounded was our crew as the thing sprung upon them with lightning speed. Mindless in its obsession to devour hobo. This might have been our saving grace. If it had an intellect I’m certain we would have seen a bloodbath. A ravenous hunger often trumps tactics. That said, Nara would have been torn to pieces if it wasn’t for Sloth putting his life on the line. His heroism almost cost him his life but the gods smiled ever so briefly. The tided had shifted and our defensive position shifted to the offence. Another victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. Keep pushing your luck meatballs.

And so they did. This commenced a series of events that fill a dungeon master with glee, random after random. You make noise in a giant tomb expect trouble. Down into the hole went the hobos, lured by corpses and treasure – perverts. Dropping down about 40’ to where the abomination had piled its dried out dinners. As they were looting a batch of Necromancers of Set and their skeleton entourage came upon our location and once again hell broke loose. The skeletons committed death from above while the vile wizards blasted us with spells. Unfortunately for me there was a huge gap in competency and this quickly lead to the slaughter of the badder guys. They fell in with us and thus provided more bodies to loot. As luck would have it while we did the looting all the previous cacophony attracted the attention of a creepy floating pizza with extra eyes and mouths on it.

The gibbering orb floated into the hole and began to buffet our hobos with gibberish and spells. But they got lucky again the abomination was more cra-cra than smart, or maybe arrogant, and floated a little too close to us. It blew up raining down gore and treasure. It was a happy piñata after all.

Yet again we began collecting loot and yet again all of our racket had brought something to the lip of the pit. This time we heard chirping and squeaking. Mongloid-Men! These guys like us. So we made love, well talk, not war. It was good and we gained some info regarding the Necros fall back location. Our hobos were one step closer to finding the Necromancers of Set lair.

We finally pulled ourselves from the pit of death and got down to task. Ding-We shrunk the longboat and Carla stuffed it in her bag, after removing poor dead Arno.  Up one longboat, down one dwarf corpse just another day in murderland.
