Wrong or Weirder Turn? (Session 85)

SESSION 85: Did Things Just Get Stranger? (5NOV18)

We were in rough shape after battling the ghastly berserkers along with the damnable chill that had been sinking into our bones the last few days. After quickly cleaning up the march continued. Get some distance from the carnage and get some rest was the plan. Again, a little luck, a hidden drow waystation (7b) was discovered once we deciphered a series of phosphorescent clues and markers. It was a luxury suite as far as subterranean military installations go. After resting we stole what was useful and pressed on.

The day seemed to be just a little colder than the previous, however that is possible, and made the morning calisthenics more challenging than normal. After travelling for most of the day we rolled into a chamber housing a spider nest. Another challenge without reward, stupid drow have been cleaning up for their spider-friends…Adding insult to injury all our racket attracted a group of margoyles spoiling for a fight – they had just been laid off so they really needed a shoulder to cry on or faces to punch. We went with the punching with swords.

Sometime during the next day, we must have crossed some sort of weirdness border. We had no idea San Francisco was right above us, that would have explained a lot.

First was an impressive piece of statuary. It was a mustachioed being both reptilian and insectoid holding a catch basket. We eventually made donations and this was good. Right after we came to the first of a number of encounters with a centipede like creature moving at a breakneck speed and of indeterminate length crossing our path. This time we waited for a while and yet it kept on going and going and going. We eventually jumped it and continued along.

Second we came to a keep ostensibly guarding or warding against ‘chaos storms’ issuing forth from the darker depths. The protectors were bat-winged dwarves. They allowed passage after a reasonable toll payment. We could not glean any information as the alarm system went nutty as we crossed the gulf that the keep enclosed. We were sent on our way as the dwarves locked down the keep and hid in their bunkers. It seemed prudent to get some distance, quickly.

Third, there was a headless corpse sitting atop some giant scale steps that brought us to a well-trodden highway. The fellow had been dead for some time or drained of all fluids, your pick your favourite truth if it helps you sleep at night. Anyways, all his cool stuff was broken but there was a map.

Four, six and eight more googolpede crossings. Yes, we had to rename it. The thing is preposterously long.

Five, the fortified defense zone and sanctum of the colossal sorcerer. Dude was crazy and not crazy about receiving guests, probably why he had a serious fortified zone.

Seven, more giant steps. Yes, that is bigger than colossal.

Nine, finding ourselves on another or maybe the same highway but less well maintained. The day was wearing on and we conveniently found an ancient shelter just off the main passage. The cistern long since dry and preserves lost to the ages. Still it seemed like a good place to rest.
