Trail of the Dead (Session 129)

 SESSION 129: Corpses Corpses Everywhere

“Nothing stopping us from walking through this door” reported Bunny, and so we did. A corridor with two more doors was revealed. East or South? The latter was chosen. The door was stuck. Boris gave a mighty boot splintering it into bits. The reason it was stuck was that the next chamber held the last of the cult and a runic golem that was acting as a wedge. The golem swung at Boris but his runty stature saved him from losing his head. The cultists were way outgunned. All they could do was delay the inevitable by assisting the golem. Say one final goodnight Gak, Meray and Baalbek eternal torment is yours. That was it, the secret lair had been emptied. It was free looting time or so we thought – traps be damned!

Ding-We triggered it in Zur’s chamber and was surrounded by deadly clockwork scorpions. I tried but he was able to use his peg leg to fend off the wicked automatons. Next was the cell block where three prisoners were discovered. They had been beaten and starved within inches of death. Gurn Hammerhand, a third level dwarven fighter who was ready to kick some Orcus ass near death or not, Serella, the daughter of a local magistrate and Rosilk a Necromancer of Set (It is hard to hide the 'evil' face tattoos). The necromancer was an interesting situation, without his spell book he was simply a broken man. Yes, he is a bad guy but it looked like his resolve was well broken and he just wanted to get the hell out of Barrowmaze. We were his best and only chance to do such. He put his head down and fell into line.

Pressing on. Crushing the cult has paid off well. Gold and esoteric items along with the rescues it was now time to look for a way out. Ding-We was confident that the cultists must have a sneaky way out in the vicinity, we just need to find it.

We did find a secret passageway with a stairwell leading up but we also found a forgotten passageway immediately adjacent to the presumptive exit. Hmm. Secret passages equals secret treasures. One last thing before blasting off. Bunny did her thing and cracked open the fraudulent wall, a black passageway that zagged its way to a heavy steel door. Beyond was a large octagonal crypt with a sarcophagus with a large chest beside in the centre. Nobody and nothing has been here for ages. Our expeditionary group pressed into the chamber. The door slammed shut behind. The door now a steel wall the group was trapped and awaiting for whatever comes next. We would face six waves of materializing undead before the door would reappear. These waves each matched our number present in the chamber. Zombies, shadows, ghouls, wights, ghasts and finally wraiths. It started out easy but the summoned legions slowly began to gain the upper hand as paralysis began to reduce our effective numbers. It looked like the wraiths were going to win but yet again luck showed up at just the right time. Our hobos bested the trapped crypt of the long forgotten wizard and after Bunny dodged a poison needle trap we were well rewarded with both gold and arcane items.

Steve had another snack while things were cleaned up and inventoried before we made our way to the stairwell.
