I Believe That Cloud is a Bit of a Spy (Session 190)

SESSION 190: Are Those Clouds Out to Get Us?

The explorers continue to do their thing claiming the lands of the future domain of Gormandia.

Working to clear Hex 13.19 of beasties.

Day 44 – (13.19 -0407/ 0306/0206/0205/0305): Clear. Just a day looking behind and under trees for stuff. Nothing of note.

Day 45 – (13.19 -0305/0406/0405/0304/0404): Clear. Aside from animal tracks bear and deer another easy day of hex clearing.

Day 46 – (13.19  -0404/0303/0403/0404/0504/0503): The day started cloudy and grey quickly producing a moderate sleety rain that lasted. A crumby day for our exploration but a good day for an orkish warband to be marching through the bush.

Reaching subhex 0303 they found themselves along the ridge of a steep ravine. Running through was the afore mentioned warband bearing familiar markings. More Festering Sores as were encountered at the Naga’s spaceship. The hobos had the both the advantage of position and surprise. They rained down hell, missiles and magic. They did some damage but the line was much longer than it was wide and the hobos were perpendicular to the band. The orks were steely in their resolve and spotting Dwarves and a fairy filled their black hearts with fire. The Sores pulled forth bows and released their own shower of missiles. The counter was largely ineffectual. The hobos maintained their tactically superior positioning for another round as the casters incapacitated ever growing numbers of the orcs. The pig-men did not have time to organize a second counter before the tanks rolled down the slope and carved their way through the remaining Sores. The orcs were unusually well treasured. Both coin and items of ancient arcane origin. Even more of a lure was a scroll tube that contained a treasure map (XI) that alluded to a princely sum. Nice.

They continued to clear subhexes for another four hours before settling down to camp as the rains finally began to ease for most of the night.

Day 47 – (13.19 -0503/0603/0703/0604/0704/0805/0806): The rains tarted again in the early morning and persisted throughout the day. No sign of lairs nor wandering creatures. It looked like most things were hunkered down. The rolling deciduous dominated forest was all quiet.

Day 48 – (13.19 -0806/0705/0605): The day started out nice until the pushed into the next sub-hex. Big nasty clouds rushed in and delivered an aggressive lightning storm. The clouds not only quickly materialized but seemed to be centred on our gang. Zap! Steve was the first lightning rod to get hit. The lightning was not normal, probably nor were the clouds, as they seemed to be targeting the hobos and accuracy seemed to be improving. They decided to ditch this subhex for the time being. The mean clouds did not follow and quickly dissipated. Definitely something unnatural going on there.

Day 49 – (13.19 -0605/0505/0506/0607/0606): The rains took the day off leaving just an overcast day. Exploration resulted in discovering a family of Grizzly bears. They did not attack but showed a defensive posture to protect the presently unseen cubs inside the den. A little bit of divine magic closed the communication gap. Bimbles explained their presence and what it would mean to the Bearstein's. The bears pointed out that they would prefer to be away from the lands of man but they could not do such until the cubs were larger. In one moon cycle they would trek north back towards the mountains. The deal was struck and Steve dropped half a deer to confirm the hobos friendship with the Bearskin clan. The rest of the day was uneventful.

Day 50 – (13.19 -0606/0705/0706 Ambush!): The woody vegetation opened up as the land rose up into what appeared to be an elevated pasture. It had been logged, coppicing stumps all over the place but no sign of man or beast. They didn’t think much of the ‘cut block’ until they were in the midst of the stumpy area. These shrubby stumps were something unnatural. The air filled with hundreds of tiny dart-like missiles and then the stumps revealed great nasty maws and began creep towards the gang. We were caught absolutely flat-footed.
