Murder vs. Death's Dealers the Final Battle (Session 128)

 SESSION 128: Still Running at He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named (15NOV20)

Straight to fighting, that is what a cliff hanger gets ya. Zombies and skeletons lunged at the frontline but our big boys held the door as devastating magics flew from behind. This made quick work of the two cultists, Gerg and Lesieg, directing the dead. They did receive additional aid from a gaggle of closet ghouls but they were simply outgunned. Under the continued cover of silence the gaggle looted and prepared for the next push. During this time Bunny hopped down the corridor to investigate the next chamber, she was invisible and was feeling lucky.

She discovered an antechamber with cultist guards before a pair of large bronze doors depicting the merits of being part of the Orcus collective. Blood, fire, suffering, unlife and such junk, this looked like the doors to a chapel. There was another smaller door in an archway to the south. It had an inscription across the arch but the specifics were not noted. Bunny stopped assessing the propaganda and her focus returned to the garrison, some of which may have begun to sniff her out. She quickly fell back to report that a cleric, a couple of fire breathing goats and zombies were present. Our hobos pulled up their britches and launched a sneak attack. They had advantage but the ruckus attracted two loathsome trolls from behind the marginally noted door to the south. The trolls, Ogbug & Wortbad, did present some challenge but the party was firing on all cylinders and they became gross green speedbumps on the assault on the Temple of the Damned. Chanting could be heard from beyond the bronze doors, something big was going down. We did not waste any time before kicking open the double doors.

We had discovered the church of Orcus and all sorts of shit was going down. The back of the chamber was a huge statue of you-know-who that cast a baleful gaze upon the ceremony that was being conducted. A cleric, Zur the black stood before a bloody altar with his attendant Emnuron and they were surrounded by corpses. Before them was a pool of mercury and rising from that was a blasphemous abomination - Manon-Itziq, Blood-Chief of Orcus. Before us was a host of followers screaming for death from their dark lord. This was a summoning and we had the distinct feeling that it needed to be stopped immediately.

Manon-Itziq belched out curses and implored Zur to finish the ritual. Our hobos leapt to action unleashing a righteous fury. Zur chanted on even as his minions were electrocuted. Before we could truly undermine the ceremony Manon-Itziq summoned forth the first-wave demonic subordinates to wreak havoc upon the party.

They needed time but we had momentum even in the face of an ever growing line of twisted demons. It looked like we were in trouble as Saph was brought low, lucky for her fae powers she will irritate again. But then the conga-line of gating buddies in failed, no more demons. Favour shifted back to us. Zur could not assist else his summoning be lost. Without his powerful magics we were able to dispatch the demonic barrier and end Zur’s evil. The summoning did not complete and Manon-Itziq was cut asunder and sent back to his dark lord to report the failure. It would be a good time to avoid whatever layer of the Abyss that Orcus calls home this night.

We have destroyed the cult of Orcus. Was it possible that the statue’s gaze was now filled with even more hate? It did not seem to concern our group as a quick rest , Steve produced a bag full of croissants, was taken before the final push to clear this wretched hive of scum and villainy. Pelinore rejoiced along with the clerics a brutal blow had been dealt to the demonic god of unlife. Steve had worked up his appetite again even though he had just snacked ten minutes prior, hunger seems to be his new best friend. More room for treasure Steve claimed but I’m not certain that is the whole story.

Back into marching order the group lined up behind Bunny as she examined the door out of the black church.

What does it mean to actually have a demon-lord as an enemy?

Are there any left of his cult beyond that door over there?

How long can we continue to act in accordance with Sir Pelinore’s righteous standards?

Tale of the Tape

Steve has been adversely affected by post traumatic undead stress syndrome (PTUSS) and has taken to eating a lot – Corpulence.

Saffron proves for the second time that permanently killing a mad fairy queen is harder than it looks.
